NFL Midseason: A Look Back at My Preseason NFL Predictions

Eli ChesnerNov 13, 2010

Before the year started, we all made our own NFL predictions, so that when the time came, whether in Week 10 or at the end of the year, we would know if we were right or wrong.

Okay, admit it, most of us had the Cowboys winning the NFC East. Well, that came out right. Not.

Most of us, or a few at least, had the Vikings winning the NFC North and possibly making the Super Bowl. That didn't work either. Or maybe the 49ers winning the NFC West. Or the Chiefs and Raiders falling apart after, say, week 5. Good job.

We all had bad predictions obviously (For all you people who picked the Bills to be winless at week 10, good job!!!). Here is a look back at my preseason Power Rankings and predictions for the 2010-11 NFL season.

PRESEASON POWER RANKINGS

32: Tampa Bay Buccaneers—Well, was I wrong here. The Buccaneers have had a surprising season after being considered the worst team in the NFL during the preseason. Most people had them at the bottom anyway.

31: Buffalo Bills—I got this right. The Bills are on pace for a 0-16 season.

30: St. Louis Rams—I was wrong here also. I actually had them as a possible surprise team this year, so that wound up being right. Sam Bradford has been fantastic as the Rams are tied atop the NFC West.

29: Cleveland Browns—Beating the Saints and Patriots have definitely put them as a team people shouldn't put aside.

28: Jacksonville Jaguars—Okay, decent job here.

27: Detroit Lions—The Lions are possibly the best 2-6 team in NFL history.

26: Seattle Seahawks—After beating the Chargers earlier in the year, I thought the Seahawks were for real. Guess not. Another wrong prediction.

25: Kansas City Chiefs and 24: Oakland Raiders—Good job here, right? Not really. The two surprising teams of the season have been fantastic this year so far. It's either of these teams AFC West title to lose.

23: Denver Broncos—Good job here.

22: Carolina Panthers—A hopeful surprise team for many before the year started, the Panthers have been a big disappointment.

21: Arizona Cardinals—Good job here.

20: Pittsburgh Steelers—A huge shocker this year comes from the Pittsburgh Steelers. After going 3-1 without Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers have been tremendous all year.

19: Chicago Bears—Good job here.

18: New York Giants—Bad job here. The Giants might be the best team in the NFC right now besides the Falcons.

17: Philadelphia Eagles—Come on, no one had Vick being this good, right?

16: Washington Redskins—Good job here.

15: Tennessee Titans—Should be interesting to see how Randy Moss fits in with the surprising Titans.

14: San Francisco 49ers—Wow. Just wow.

13: Houston Texans—Good job here.

12: Miami Dolphins—I thought I put them too high. I was right.

11: Cincinnati Bengals—I thought the Bengals would have the No. 1 passing offense and win the AFC North as a possibility. Oh well.

10: Atlanta Falcons—A very good team that is just getting better.

9: Dallas Cowboys—Oh my God, the Cowboys. Where to begin. I'm not even going to start.

8: New England Patriots—Good job here.

7: San Diego Chargers—They are starting to get their act together, but the Chargers have had a disappointing year.

6: New York Jets—Good job here.

5: Minnesota Vikings—With the Brad Childress controversy, this puts the Vikings out of the race for sure.

4: Baltimore Ravens, 3: Green Bay Packers, 2: Indianapolis Colts and 1: New Orleans Saints- Good job.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS

Here are my preseason predictions:

AFC East

  1. New York Jets (11-5)
  2. New England Patriots (9-7)
  3. Miami Dolphins (8-8)
  4. Buffalo Bills (3-13)

AFC North

  1. Baltimore Ravens (12-4)
  2. Cincinnati Bengals (10-6)
  3. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-9)
  4. Cleveland Browns (4-12)

AFC South

  1. Indianapolis Colts (13-3)
  2. Houston Texans (10-6)
  3. Tennessee Titans (8-8)
  4. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-13)

AFC West

  1. San Diego Chargers (9-7)
  2. Kansas City Chiefs (8-8)
  3. Oakland Raiders (7-9)
  4. Denver Broncos (5-11)

NFC East

  1. Dallas Cowboys (12-4)
  2. Washington Redskins (9-7)
  3. New York Giants (7-9)
  4. Philadelphia Eagles (7-9)

NFC North

  1. Green Bay Packers (14-2)
  2. Minnesota Vikings (11-5)
  3. Chicago Bears (9-7)
  4. Detroit Lions (6-10)

NFC South

  1. Atlanta Falcons (12-4)
  2. New Orleans Saints (10-6)
  3. Carolina Panthers (9-7)
  4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-15)

NFC West

  1. San Francisco 49ers (9-7)
  2. Seattle Seahawks (6-10)
  3. Arizona Cardinals (5-11)
  4. St. Louis Rams (4-12)

Okay, so the ones I completely got wrong were the AFC North and the whole NFC. I did well with the AFC though, huh?

So there you have it. Trust me, I suck on predictions.
