NCAA Women's College Basketball: Will the Huskies Win 100 Games In a Row?

King James? Are you for real? Brett Favre-a-licious? Pfft.  I am Tiger who? Do I want to be like Mike? Please. I want to be like King Geno. 

He’s like a lion with the thickest mane in the jungle protecting his pride. Dudes and “dudettes,” holler back if you feel me. 

The man is surrounded by educated and talented beauty. I don’t normally use animal comparisons when humans are concerned, but the analogy is apropos with something very, very rare.

One of the most forceful stories this sports year—period—is about the University of Connecticut Huskies women’s basketball team.

They’re on their way to an extreme amount of immortality, and I hope they make it. The talented and educated beauties surrounding King Geno are on a 78-game winning streak—and counting.

This season, they could soar to extraordinary air by eclipsing 100 games won in a row.  The only team I envision challenging them this season are the Baylor Bears. 

The UCLA Bruins men’s team won 88 consecutive games in the John Wooden era. Their streak lasted from Jan. 30, 1971 to Jan. 19, 1974.

From 1919-25, Passaic (N.J.) High School’s basketball squad won a reported 159 consecutive games. Considered the longest amateur American winning streak on record, one other team came close.  

The football team at De La Salle High School (Concord, Calif.) broke a 151-game winning streak off during the 1990s.

The NBA record is 33 games in a row, and the mighty Los Angeles Lakers set it in 1971-72.  It took Oscar Robertson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the Milwaukee Bucks to stop them.

Among women ballers, the closest thing to Kareem is Baylor’s Brittney Griner. The 6'8" sophomore from Houston was named to the Naismith watch list for 2010-11.

Griner’s teammate, Melissa Jones, a senior guard from Colorado is also on the list. Baylor is ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Women’s Basketball Preseason Top 25 Poll.

UConn is No. 1, but of course. They were 39-0 last year, and unanimous preseason AP All-American, Maya Moore, returns as a senior.

I dig Geno’s young women because of their “anywhere, anytime” attitude. So many major college programs don’t prescribe to their philosophy. 

The Huskies (“Huskettes”) play against Baylor on Nov. 16 in Wal-Mart’s parking lot. I’m kidding. The game goes down in Hartford.

I have the heart for understanding most major programs can’t come close to a 100-game winning streak. 

Talking about anytime, anywhere, the Huskies also play AP No. 2 and Nos. 10-15 this season. It won’t be easy to get to 100—at least on paper.

UConn plays at No. 3 Stanford, No. 11 West Virginia, No. 12 Notre Dame, No. 13 Georgetown, No. 14 St. Johns and No. 15 North Carolina.

The Huskies also face No. 7 Duke and No. 18 Florida State. There aren’t any “Little Sisters of the Poor” on Auriemma’s Christmas wish lists—any season.

Given No. 4 Tennessee is absent from their schedule, UConn gets a sort of reprieve. Geno Auriemma and Pat Summitt aren’t the best of friends—allegedly. 

I love Summitt. She’s not a hater.

Geno carries an arrogance haters love to hate. Why wouldn’t he? His roster consistently consists of bad to the bone ballers.

This season is no different.  Five freshmen (fresh women), including the 6'1" guard-forward, Samarie Walker, could contribute. She was the nation’s top-ranked junior and senior—according to multiple sources—and a 2010 McDonald’s All-American.

UConn boasts three freshmen who were 2010 “Mickey Dee’s” All-America players: Stefanie Dolson and Bria Hartley are the other two.

They are definitely locked and loaded like the mighty Lakers, but their competition also got better. 

Baylor, OU, Stanford, Tennessee, FSU, Notre Dame and Duke also have incoming freshman who made the 2010 McDonald’s team.  Duke has three of them.

The Huskies’ schedule is a puzzle of powerhouse programs, but I suppose they will solve the jigsaw and win it all.
