Georgia Football: Auburn or Georgia Tech, Which School Would UGA Rather Defeat?

Brian JonesNov 11, 2010

With Georgia traveling to Auburn to take on the Tigers this weekend, it will be the 114th time these two teams have faced each other.

And after the Bulldogs play their annual game against the team from Auburn, Ala., they will have a week off before they take on their in-state rivals, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

So with two more games left for Georgia which feature their two biggest rivals, who would Georgia rather beat, the Tigers of Auburn of the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech?

It’s an interesting question and not as easy to answer as one would think. Both schools are hated by Georgia fans, and fans of both schools don’t like Georgia. Let’s breakdown both the Auburn series and the Georgia Tech series.

The Auburn and Georgia rivalry is called the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry because they have been playing since 1892. It’s also a very close series when it comes to the win-loss record with Auburn having a one game advantage.

However, Georgia has won the last four games against the Tigers and six out the last eight since 2002.

What’s interesting about these two schools is they are similar in many ways. Auburn is located in the heart of Auburn, Ala. and everything in that city revolves around the university. The same can be said for Georgia, as everything in Athens revolves around UGA.

Another similarity is coaching. One of Auburn’s most successful coaches, Pat Dye, played for Georgia and one of Georgia’s most successful coaches, Vince Dooley, played for Auburn.

Both had a dominating running back come through in the 80’s. Auburn had 1985 Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson, and we all know about Herschel Walker, who won the Heisman for Georgia in 1982.

As for Georgia and Georgia Tech, the only thing that these two schools share is that they play in the same state.  They started playing in 1893, and overall Georgia has dominated the series with a 60-37-5 record.

The series is called Clean Old-Fashioned Hate because these two schools don’t like each other. The reason for that is because Georgia gets a lot more attention when it comes to recruiting and national recognition.

But Georgia Tech was the last school in the state to win a Division I-FCS National Championship, and the Yellow Jackets are the current ACC champions.

So Georgia would love nothing more than to knock Georgia Tech off the mountain at the end of the season, just to prove it is the best team in the state.

Going back to the question, who would Georgia rather beat, Auburn or Georgia Tech? When push comes to shove, Georgia Tech is the team Georgia would love to beat on a consistent basis.

There is no doubt Georgia would like to beat Auburn, who is looking to win a BCS title. But year in and year out, Georgia Tech is always the team that gets Georgia fans fired up. The same can be said about Auburn, but because of the similarities the two schools share, there is a mutual respect for each other.

With the Bulldogs possibly staring at a 5-7 record, they are looking to beat both teams not just for bragging rights, but for a winning record.
