NFL Week 10 Picks: Can Jason Garrett Upset Giants in Coaching Debut?

Gabe ZaldivarNov 10, 2010

NFL Week 10 picks are here for you to argue over.

Going into this week there is one glaring question that is tearing away at us all: Can Jason Garrett make a difference?

Whether the Cowboys win is largely inconsequential. I would like to see them put forth an effort this week. If they actually try, then that is enough for the coach's first week on the job.

As for the other games, I know exactly what is going to happen. There is no need to even watch the games. Just trust me on this.

Bye Week: Green Bay, Oakland, New Orleans, San Diego

Baltimore Ravens at Atlanta Falcons

Why Baltimore Could Win

Baltimore is a complete team. They are so good that traveling for an away game should not matter to them.

They have a great running game to complement their fierce air attack. The Ravens are a top five NFL team, and the Falcons have their hands full.

Why Atlanta Could Win

The Falcons are no ordinary team, either. They have shown this year that they can put together a solid effort on both sides of the ball. They also have a great run game, led by running back Michael Turner. I look to their Week 1 loss to the Steelers for a comparable game for Thursday's match. The Steelers were taken to the limit without Roethlisberger.

Prediction

Ravens 24, Falcons 17

Regardless, this should be a tight game. The Falcons have not proved that they can win the big game. When they go up against a superior opponent, they lose. This will be the same scenario.

Detroit Lions at Buffalo Bills

Why Lions Could Win

The Lions may be without Matthew Stafford, but they still have a formidable offense. Well, anyone does against the Bills. Buffalo makes mediocre teams look like offensive juggernauts. I expect Jahvid Best and Calvin Johnson to have great fantasy days.

Why Bills Could Win

The Lions may put up points, but the Bills will do the same. This week you have two bad teams going into battle. I am not sure the Bills are the worse team. Ryan Fitzpatrick is a great QB on a horrible team. He will get them on the board early and often.

Prediction

Lions 24, Bills 30

The Bills will finally get into the win column. Buffalo will do just enough on defense for their offense to actually matter this week.

Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears

Why the Vikings Could Win

The Vikings have a good team. Sometimes we forget that this team that is falling apart at the seams still has some great talent on the roster. Brett Favre could get back another weapon this week, as well, as Sidney Rice may make an appearance. That will open up the game for Percy Harvin.

So far Childress is mum on whether Rice will play or not. My guess is that he does. If Rice is game-ready, it gives the Vikings a better chance to win. As we all know, Childress needs a win every week to stay on as head coach.

Why the Bears Could Win

The Bears look to be getting things together. Jay Cutler looked like himself last week. Anything he can put together in positive production will benefit their already stout rushing game. The real asset here is that the Vikings are desperate.

The Bears are playing against a coach who is on the hot seat and a QB that can't stand his coach.

Prediction

Vikings 17, Bears 21

The Vikings will lose the game and shortly after their coach. Brett Favre will get just what he wanted.

New York Jets at Cleveland Browns

Why the Jets Could Win

The Jets defense should put an end to the Browns amazing winning streak of two games. I mean that somewhat seriously. The Browns have taken two upsets in a row. The Jets should be the better team on the field. They know about the last two weekends and have made their players aware that they must not rest on Cleveland.

Why the Browns Could Win

The Jets may be the better team, but I just don't know that the Browns got the memo. Cleveland has shown a great talent for taking down the better teams in the NFL. They shocked the Saints and then did the same to the Patriots.

Prediction

Jets 17, Browns 14

This would be a great weekend to pick the upset. The Browns are surging. I just don't think they have the energy to do it a third time in a row.

Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins

Why the Titans Could Win

The Titans already had a great offense. Then they went and signed Randy Moss. Moss will be a model citizen for the first couple of weeks. The wheels won't come off this one yet.

Why the Dolphins Could Win

The Dolphins are a hungry team. It seems that all they want is a little respect. The Dolphins have had a very tough schedule. They are tested and should be ready for Sunday.

Prediction

Titans 24, Dolphins 10

The Dolphins may be prepared, but it will not matter. The Titans are a much better team.

Cincinnati Bengals at Indianapolis Colts

Why the Bengals Could Win

The Bengals finally showed some heart and passion in their Monday Night loss to the Steelers. We all knew they had the talent. We were just waiting for them to show it.

Why the Colts Could Win

The Colts have just as good a team as the Bengals. They just know how to win on a consistent basis. With Chad Ochocinco making waves this week over a lack of catches, the Colts should make easy work of the Bengals here.

Prediction

Bengals 24, Colts 35

The Bengals may have showed some life, but without a nationally covered game they will go back into the basement where they have been all season.

Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars

Why the Texans Could Win

This is a division grudge match for last place. The loser goes to the back of the pack. Believe me when I say that the Texans understand this. They are a playoff-caliber team that is fighting to stay relevant.

Why the Jaguars Could Win

The Jaguars already have a monster in Maurice Jones-Drew.  They now have a pretty good QB showing that he is ready to take on all comers. David Garrard has put together some great efforts and should continue his growth this Sunday.

Prediction

Texans 24, Jaguars 17

The Texans are the better team. The Jags may be coming off a great win, but it was against the Cowboys.

Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Why the Panthers Could Win

The Panthers are right up there with the worst teams in the NFL. Couple that with the fact that they just lost their QB and running back to injury, and things do not look good. Anything is possible. That is really the only shot they have. That in this crazy world, anything could happen. There, that is the best case I can make for them.

Why the Buccaneers Could Win

The Bucs are young and talented. Josh Freeman has looked remarkably calm at QB and should have a big day.

Prediction

Panthers 10, Bucs 24

Sorry, Carolina fans. Sometimes it is best to skip football season.

Kansa City Chiefs at Denver Broncos

Why the Chiefs Could Win

If the Chiefs are going to win this game, it will have to be on the ground. It is the only significant advantage they have.

Why the Broncos Could Win

The Chiefs play horrid football when they travel. It will take more than that to knock the Chiefs down a rung. Kyle Orton will have to be great, and the defense will have to rattle Matt Cassel.

Prediction

Chiefs 14, Broncos 17

Kansas City will once again find a way to lose on the road.

Seattle Seahawks at Arizona Cardinals

MINNEAPOLIS - NOVEMBER 07: Running back Tim Hightower #34 of the Arizona Cardinals carries the ball against the Minnesota Vikings at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome on November 7, 2010 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings won 27-24 in overtime. (Photo by

Why the Seahawks Could Win

The Seahawks are a bad football team. They should be thankful, though, because they play an equally bad one this Sunday. Seattle has to get their running backs going. Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett are the only weapons they have.

Why the Cardinals Could Win

Larry Fitzgerald is the man that will get it done. As the Cards flip-flop on quarterbacks, Fitzgerald has been the constant threat Arizona needs on their offense. Other than that, this team is pretty weak.

Prediction

Seahawks 24, Cardinals 27

I flipped a coin, if you must know. This has to be one of the worst games on the year. No team really deserves to win this one.

Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants

Why the Cowboys Could Win

Let's see, how can the Cowboys win this one? Well, if Jason Garrett has a secret machine that alters time and space, then yes, I think they have a shot.

Why the Giants Could Win

The Giants are much better team, with little to no issues. As the Cowboys quietly self-destruct on the other side of the field, the Giants will be winning the game.

Prediction

Cowboys 9, Giants 24

This is the big question of the week. Can Jason Garrett salvage the Cowboys enough to beat the Giants?

No. No he can not.

St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers

Why the Rams Could Win

The Rams started the season as a bad team with no receivers and a young quarterback. What they have done thus far is get better every week. Sam Bradford has suffered his fair share of growing pains, but it has helped the team in the long run.

Why the 49ers Could Win

The 49ers are trying to salvage the season. They were the out-and-out favorite to win the division. Now they find themselves in a weekly must win situation.

Prediction

Rams 17, 49ers 14

The Rams have just been a better team this season on both sides of the ball. This is late enough into the season for me to feel comfortable with Bradford on the road.

New England Patriots at Pittsburgh Steelers

Why the Patriots Could Win

The Patriots just find a way to stay relevant. After shipping off talented players, they got better. Tom Brady is the leader that keeps this machine rolling. They should have a bounce-back after a troubling loss at the hands of the Cleveland Browns.

Why the Steelers Could Win

The Steelers have it all. They are tough on defense and prolific on offense. Ben Roethlisberger is now back to his old self and should have no problem getting points on the board this weekend at home.

Prediction

Patriots 27, Steelers 30

Now this is what I am talking about. This is the exact opposite of the Seahawks vs. Cardinals match. Here you have two class teams going into battle. This is the reason I plan to be on my couch Sunday.

Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins

14 of 14
PHILADELPHIA - SEPTEMBER 12: Michael Vick #7 of the Philadelphia Eagles warms up before a game against the Green Bay Packers during the NFL season opener at Lincoln Financial Field on September 12, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Mike Ehrm

Why the Eagles Could Win

The Eagles are good. With Michael Vick behind center, they are unstoppable. Vick has come back as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. His arm is as strong as anyone, and his legs are just as fast as they were a couple of years ago. More importantly, though, he has learned to be patient and wait in the pocket. That has made all the difference.

Why the Redskins Could Win

The Redskins have their hands full on Monday. For the next few days they will have media coverage on the possible dispute between Donovan McNabb and Mike Shanahan. In the end, you have an aging QB that will choose this game to prove his critics wrong. That could be a good thing or a bad thing.

Prediction

Eagles 28, Redskins 24

McNabb will try to do too much. It is clear he doesn't have much left in the tank. Couple that with Vick dominating the football landscape, and you have a win for Philly on Monday Night.
