Philadelphia Flyers Sign Star Forward Claude Giroux To a Three-Year Contract

Donald WoodNov 8, 2010

Maybe he won’t be the greatest of all time, but he is damn good.

The Philadelphia Flyers signed Claude Giroux to a three year contract extension worth $11.25 million on Monday.  The cap hit will be averaged out to $3.75 million per season, which will be a real steal when he blossoms even further.

"I'm really excited to be with the Flyers organization for three more years," Giroux told the media Monday morning. "We are going to be a very good team, hopefully for many years.”

Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren is actively trying to lock up his star forwards before they become restricted free agents this summer.

“We had this opportunity to do it with Claude [Giroux] and we're extremely happy to have this done," GM Holmgren said Monday.

Now with Giroux’s contract out of the way, Holmgren will turn to the contracts of Jeff Carter and Ville Leino.  Holmgren will be dancing around the salary cap line for the next couple of years with the moves that he made to turn the club around after the worst year in Flyers history just a few seasons ago.

This is a fantastic move for the Flyers, because this will save the club some headaches and some cash down the road.  With the average salary being under four million, Giroux will more than likely outperform his contract.  Also, because the average of the salary is as low as it is, signing one of the other restricted free agents to a long term deal will be more feasible.

I am proud to be a Flyers fan and I am proud to have Claude Giroux wear the “P” across his chest.  So go out and get your Giroux jerseys everyone, it’s safe for at least three more years!
