Dallas Cowboys Fire Wade Phillips: The Coach's Worst Moments

Adam SpencerNov 8, 2010

The reports coming out of the Dallas Cowboys camp today are that head coach Wade Phillips is not at the team's practice facilities.

After a 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers last night, it looks like this is finally the end of the road for the beleaguered coach.

His time in Dallas certainly had more low points than high points, from his subpar record in December to his overall playoff failures.

Though he stayed classy to the very end of his tenure with Dallas, never calling out any players or throwing anyone under the bus—it was definitely time for him to go.

Let's take a look at Phillips' five worst moments as the head coach of the Cowboys.

5. 2008: Giants 21, Cowboys 17

This was the first home playoff game of the Wade Phillips era in Dallas, and the Cowboys lost a heart breaker to the division rival New York Giants.

Unlike the horrible Phillips games to follow in this slideshow, the Cowboys were actually competitive in this one, with the Giants winning on a Brandon Jacobs touchdown run early in the fourth quarter.

But, the fact of the matter is you can't lose home playoff games, especially when they are against your hated rivals.

Unfortunately for Cowboy fans, this game was just a sign of what was to come from the Wade Phillips era.

4. 2008: Rams 34, Cowboys 14

The 2008 St. Louis Rams finished with a 2-14 record. One of those two wins was this drubbing of the Cowboys.

Looking back on the Cowboys season, in which they faltered down the stretch, losing three of four games in December, this game stuck out as probably the worst loss of the season.

Granted, Brad Johnson had to start this game at QB and threw for three interceptions, but the defense failed to show up. Allowing 34 points to the Rams is unacceptable.

In hindsight, winning this game would have vaulted the Cowboys into the playoffs despite their December meltdown.

3. 2008: Eagles 44, Cowboys 6

With the playoffs on the line in the 2008 season, the Cowboys had a road game against the division rival Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys needed to win in order to grab an NFC wild card spot. But, the team managed only two measly field goals as Donovan McNabb and the Eagles thoroughly embarrassed the Cowboys.

This is when speculation about Phillips being fired really gained steam. It's anyone's guess how he's lasted nearly two full seasons since.

This game was in the 2010 NFC Divisional playoff round. With a trip to the NFC Championship Game on the line, the Cowboys played one of the worst games in team history.

Tony Romo was sacked six times, threw for less than 200 yards, had no touchdown passes and threw an interception. The Cowboy offense managed only a second quarter field goal.

The defense was even worse, allowing Brett Favre to torch them for four touchdown passes as the Vikings cruised to an easy 31 point victory.

Last night was by far the lowest point of Phillips' tenure in Dallas. Simply put, his players quit on him.

This team has way too much talent to be losing games by 38 points, but they didn't seem to care.

Last night's game featured more dropped passes, lazy tackling, poor coverage and sloppy turnovers. Plus, Phillips made horrible mistakes with timeout and challenge management, which ended up costing the Cowboys on a fumble that would have been overturned if they had a timeout left to challenge with.

The Cowboys were thoroughly dominated in all three aspects of the football game last night, making it the worst performance Phillips has ever presided over.
