NFL Power Rankings Week 10: Are the Giants Now the Best Team in Football?
Week 9 may not be quite over in the NFL, but with only one more game left to be played, we can assume where most teams will fall and look ahead to Week 10 Power Rankings.
For the second week in a row, the best team in the NFL was knocked off its perch. Some teams were dealt devastating injuries while others worked as a team to forge an upset. It was a great Sunday, so let's see where the ships have landed.
Bottom Feeders: Nos. 32-21
1 of 21
32: Bills (0-8 ) lost to Bears
Last Week's Ranking: 32
Another week, another close one that ends in defeat. They will win one, I think.
31: Panthers (1-7) lost to Saints
Last Week's Ranking: 30
The Panthers had their quarterback and running back injured in this one. Their season just went from bad to worse.
30: Cowboys (1-7) lost to Packers
Last Week's Ranking: 31
I do not have the words to describe how bad this team is. Therefore, I will make one up: The Cowboys are horrific.
29: Cardinals (3-5) lost to Vikings
Last Week's Ranking: 23
Losing does not feel good. Losing to the Vikings feels worse.
28: Broncos (2-6) BYE
Last Week's Ranking: 29
The Broncos have lost four straight—maybe the bye week came just in time.
27: 49ers (2-6) BYE
Last Week's Ranking: 28
The 49ers are slowly turning this around. Their game this week against the Rams is a must-win though.
26: Lions (2-6) lost to Jets
Last Week's Ranking: 26
At least they pushed the Jets to the limit.
25: Bengals (2-5) Monday Night
Last Week's Ranking: 25
Monday night will showcase either the best the NFL has in a receiving corps or an offense that is broken. It will be fun to watch regardless.
24: Vikings (3-5) beat Cardinals
Last Week's Ranking: 24
Does one quarter of great football save a job? Brad Childress hopes so.
23: Browns (3-5) beat Patriots
Last Week's Ranking: 27
This was the biggest upset of the week. It was a fabulous win for this gritty team.
22: Seahawks (4-4) lost to Giants
Last Week's Ranking: 19
Seattle looked bad—real bad.
21: Jaguars (4-4) BYE
Last Week's Ranking: 21
You can't lose ground when you are just sitting at home watching the action from your couch.
20: Chargers (4-5) Beat Texans
2 of 21
Philip Rivers was a true leader for San Diego against the Texans. It is quite clear that the Chargers can not win unless one aspect of their team completely dominates. They are still such a shaky team that they needed a Pro Bowl-level game from their QB to squeak by the Texans.
Rivers threw four touchdowns and they still barely won. They did find a potential star in wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu.
Last Week's Ranking: 22
19: Rams (4-4) BYE
3 of 21
The Rams are 4-4 and tied for first in the NFC West. They better have received ample rest during their bye week because their biggest game comes this week against the 49ers.
The grudge match will make or break each team's season.
Last Week's Ranking: 20
18: Redskins (4-4) BYE
4 of 21
Sometimes a bye week comes just in the nick of time. Just when you couldn't stand to hear another Mike Shanahan or Donovan McNabb story, the Redskins get a week off.
The rest will serve to alleviate some of the tension that was building between coach and player.
Last Week's Ranking: 17
17: Raiders (5-4) Beat Chiefs
5 of 21
For the life of me, I just cannot figure out the 2010 Raiders. They started off as a team without a direction. But here they are with another impressive win against a very good opponent.
This time the Raiders beat the Chiefs with grit and good special teams play. It pains me to say it, but I may have to jump on board the bandwagon soon.
Last Week's Ranking: 18
16: Buccaneers (5-3) Lost to Falcons
6 of 21
I hate dropping the Buccaneers. They are young and exciting. Their loss to the division-leading Falcons was a close one.
This week was just a life lesson that younger teams must receive before they make the big jump.
Last Week's Ranking: 14
15: Texans (4-4) Lost to Chargers
7 of 21
Houston's loss to the Chargers may have been a tough game. It may have even been well-fought. But you cannot let a shaky team like the Chargers run up that many yards on your defense.
Last Week's Ranking: 13
14: Chiefs (5-3) Lost to Raiders
8 of 21
Chiefs fans, I understand your team has put together a great season. I understand that you would like to get a bit more respect from NFL pundits. Well, someone needs to tell your team to not drop a game against the Oakland Raiders.
I was just about to sing your praises and then you go and do something like this.
Last Week's Ranking: 11
13: Dolphins (4-4) Lost to Ravens
9 of 21
The Dolphins played a mirror image of themselves Sunday. The Ravens have a great running game to complement a stout defense. The Ravens have a young QB still getting things going in the NFL.
The Ravens though, showed that they could do what the Dolphins do, just better.
Last Week's Ranking: 12
12: Packers (6-3) Beat Cowboys
10 of 21
The Packers played a complete game Sunday night, but I still have qualms bumping them up this far. You shouldn't get a pat on the back for beating up on the Cowboys.
Dallas is already adept at gift-wrapping the game for their opponents. This week was no different.
Last Week's Ranking: 16
11: Bears (5-3) Beat Bills
11 of 21
There are some weeks that the Jay Cutler for Kyle Orton deal looks lopsided in favor of Chicago. This was one of those weeks. Facing a surprisingly competent offense in Buffalo, the Bears knew going into the game they would have to put points on the board.
Cutler was a leader out there. He controlled the pace of the game and gave the Bears enough to sidestep what would have been a big upset.
Last Week's Ranking: 15
10: Titans (5-3) BYE
12 of 21
This Titans team is exciting. They have one of the best running backs in the game to go along with one of the more mobile quarterbacks. They are a surging team that is looking to make some noise in the postseason.
Oh yeah—they also just signed Randy Moss.
Last Week's Ranking: 10
9: Patriots (5-2) Lost to Browns
13 of 21
Well, that could have gone better against the Browns. The Patriots just received their worst defeat of the season against one of the bottom feeders in the NFL.
However, with a team that is as stacked with talent as the Patriots are, we will give them a mulligan this week and keep them in the Top 10.
Last Week's Ranking: 1
8: Colts (5-3) Lost to Eagles
14 of 21
It is hard to fault the Colts for the loss here. They were going against a hot Eagles team that was getting back their star quarterback in Mike Vick.
Beyond that, they were missing some of their key offensive players. They then lost receiver Austin Collie on a brutal hit early in the game. With all that said, the Eagles just looked better. It remains to be seen how the depleted Colts bounce back from this.
Last Week's Ranking: 2
7: Eagles (5-3) Beat Colts
15 of 21
The Eagles needed this one. After coming off a disappointing loss, they needed a statement game. That is exactly what they had in beating the Colts.
They let it be known throughout the NFL that when the Eagles have Mike Vick behind center, they are one of the best teams in the league.
Last Week's Ranking: 9
6: Falcons (6-2) Beat Buccaneers
16 of 21
When Matt Ryan and Michael Turner are at their best, they are a joy to watch. This week they took the division grudge match with Tampa Bay and showed the youngsters how it is done.
The Falcons are in for a real test next when they take on the Ravens.
Last Week's Ranking: 8
5: Giants (6-2) Beat Seattle
17 of 21
The Giants killed the Seahawks. Seattle was made to look utterly silly to even think they could take the same field as New York. Eli did what Mannings do best—throw touchdowns.
The only blemish on the game was the touchdown thrown by Seattle QB Charlie Whitehurst. By that time, though, most of the Giants were phoning the game in.
Last Week's Ranking: 7
4: Jets (6-2) Beat Lions
18 of 21
Last week the Jets lost a close one to the Packers that dropped them in the rankings. This week they flirted with an even bigger upset: The Jets were taken to the limit by the lowly Detroit Lions.
The Jets may be one of the best teams in the NFL, but they have clear question marks.
Last Week's Ranking: 6
3: Ravens (6-2) Beat Dolphins
19 of 21
The Ravens have been unstoppable since Joe Flacco decided to act like a quarterback. But they are the best in the business when their defense is clicking.
The Dolphins tried to make this a game but were unable to mount any kind of production in the second half. The Ravens defense refused to be beaten today. When they play like that, Baltimore is just a scary team to face.
Last Week's Ranking: 5
2: Saints (6-3) Beat Panthers
20 of 21
Another team that beat up a sorry excuse for an NFL team. What makes the Saints' beat-down of Carolina more shameful is that they took out the only bright spots the Panthers had.
Both Matt Moore and Jonathan Stewart had to leave the game due to injuries. There is no need to pick on teams when they are down.
Last Week's Ranking: 4
1: Steelers (5-1) Monday Night
21 of 21
The Steelers will answer any questions from last week's loss when they take on the Bengals on Monday night.
Despite their loss to the Saints, they are still the No. 1 team. They have the most balanced and dangerous team in the NFL. With little to no weak spots they would be the hands-down favorite to win if the Super Bowl were played tomorrow.
