Wayne Rooney Off to the States: What Impact Will This Have?

Zaakir HoosenNov 6, 2010

After weeks of under-par performances from the England striker Wayne Rooney, followed by personal issues which the media took full advantage of, then a horror week of scrutiny when he called for his time at Old Trafford.

Nevertheless he went on and signed a five-year deal to stay at the club according to some reports at £200,000 a week contract.

But since then, he has enjoyed a week in Dubai on vacation with his wife Coleen, and now is of to the United States for further treatment.

So where does it leave him? Can Rooney come back and make a real impact on the season?

These and more questions are been asked by United followers as we look to tackle another tricky encounter when Manchester United faces the Wolves in the League.

Yes, true the absence of Rooney has had little effect on the teams performance, the younger players have stood up and counted themselves while some of the experience players have been out.

But a match as big as the Manchester-Derby coming up and having some of your big match-winners out, could be a huge concern.

Many would feel that Hernandez and Co. are good enough to face City, and I wouldn't disagree. They have enough quality to take on the billionaire.

But together with quality and talent, comes experience which is vital for big match days. Can these young guns handle the pressure in what many have labeled as the biggest derby clash in years?

Rooney has always played his part on Derby-day and he will surely be missed.

I'd like to know what you think. How will Rooney's return impact United in terms of team selection? And, can a fully fit Rooney just jump back into the starting 11?

Many would think so, while I disagree. There are many players who have shown enough desire and hunger for first team action and when given the opportunity have risen to the challenge.

Mike Phelan, United assistant had this to say regarding Wayne's US trip:

"We want to create an environment for him that will give him the best opportunity to be fit in a short space of time,” he said. “He needs the conditioning and he can go there without the attention he'd get around here."

“We're not sending him away just for the sake of it. He's going there to do some serious work. He went to Dubai for nothing but a break—there wasn't much work involved in that. So we have to get him refocused and get him back to the job at hand, which is to play for Manchester United.”
