Shawne Merriman, Randy Moss Claimed Off Waivers: A Reaction To The Acquisitions

Old AccountNov 3, 2010

On Wednesday, both Randy Moss and Shawn Merriman found new homes after being placed on waivers 24 hours ago.

Randy Moss headlined not only the news this week with his rant, but opened even more eyes after being waived by the Vikings after four games. Now, he has found a new home, and it will be with Chris Johnson, Jeff Fisher, and the Tennesee Titans.

A move to acquire Moss from the waiver wire became more imminent after learning that receiver Kenny Britt could be out for quite awhile with a hamstring injury.

On paper, this seems like a good fit for Moss. He joins a team that seems to be on track for the playoffs, with an experienced yet well respected head coach at the helm. The Titans also hold the best running back in football, and the acquisition of Moss should be able to establish a deep threat that wasn't to common if Kenny Britt wasn't involved.

I believe we won't see this move reach it's full potential until Kenny Britt returns from injury. The Titans offense could become impossible to stop if all three of these guys are healthy, and on the field at the same time.

Not only will defensive coordinators have to put less men on the field to stop Chris Johnson, but most secondary's will have trouble shutting down two talented receivers.

The biggest surprise for me, though, was the lack of interest. Teams such as the Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins, and Seattle Seahawks passed on him, despite seeming like good fits on paper. Being that Moss's contract expires after this year, it is worth the risk for the Titans who are a feared team in the league today.

On the other side, the Buffalo Bills claiming Shawn Merriman shocked me greatly. Sure, they may be need in need of a pass rusher and a run stopper.

However, Merriman is going to want to join a winning team in the future, and it will be tough for me to see him resign with a team that is in major rebuilding mode.

Teams like the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, and the New Orleans Saints seemed to make more sense for the veteran line backer.
