Randy Moss Claimed by the Tennessee Titans: What This Move Means for the NFL

Bob EvansNov 3, 2010

Randy Moss is a Tennessee Titan.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, Randy Moss made his way back to a playoff and Super Bowl contender through the NFL's waiver system today.

After being abruptly waived by the Minnesota Vikings following a series of "poor comments", Moss suddenly finds himself in a favorable situation once again.

Schefter of ESPN says that Moss plans to report to the Titans and become a member of the organization.

His tenure with the Vikings was rather short, especially for the price of a third round pick that the organization gave to the crafty New England Patriots, and Moss had absolutely no positive impact on the team whatsoever.

The Vikings had high hope when they acquired Moss, but those hopes seemed to fade away fast after coach Brad Childress decided to part ways with one of the greatest deep threats in NFL history.

Now Randy Moss finds himself on the 5-3 Titans who are locked and loaded with playmakers Vince Young and Chris Johnson, but have always suffered from the "lack of receivers" syndrome.

So what exactly does Randy Moss to the Titans mean for the organization and the NFL?

Let's take a look.

The New England Patriots Are Smarter Than Everyone

I'm not sure how they continue to do it, but the Patriots are the best team in the NFL at acquiring draft picks.

Before the Randy Moss trade, they had two picks in nearly every round of the 2011 draft.

Then they shocked the NFL by trading one of the keys to Tom Brady's offensive assault to the Minnesota Vikings for a third round pick.

Some people thought the Patriots were crazy, but it seems the organization was just selling high on one of the NFL's greatest receivers of all-time.

I mean, they swindled the Vikings into giving them a third round pick for Moss, and less than a month later the Vikings waived Moss and got NOTHING in return.

Not only did the Patriots acquire another draft pick for their arsenal, they turned around and traded a pick for Deion Branch of the Seattle Seahawks.

So if you look at it, they acquired an earlier pick and a receiver and got rid of Moss before his big, public outburst several weeks later.

Talk about selling high and buying low.

The Moss trade for the Patriots just goes to show that they are the best organization in the NFL at acquiring and building draft picks for the future.

And the team hasn't missed a beat since the trade of Moss.

The Minnesota Vikings Panicked and Could Be Headed for Major Changes

If you looked at game film from last season to this season, one thing was missing in the Viking's offense.

A deep threat.

With Sydney Rice injured and out for the majority of the 2010 season, and the Vikings in desperate need of help for quarterback Brett Favre they did what any team in need would do.

Grab the best guy available.

After many unsuccessful attempts at prying Vincent Jackson away from the Chargers, the Vikings turned to a familiar player in Randy Moss.

I mean, who could blame them.

The Chargers wanted first and third round picks for Jackson, and the Patriots wanted a third for Moss.

Jackson is younger, costs less in salary, and would be better for the long-term, but Moss is a proven NFL veteran.

How could you pass up on that deal?

Well, it seems that the Patriots knew something that the Vikings didn't when they traded Moss, and now it could be the Vikings that are in for major changes.

Coach Brad Childress directly defied the owner's order of keeping Randy Moss on the team, and Brett Favre still doesn't know what to do with the Minnesota offense.

The team is one year removed from an NFC Championship appearance, and they are sitting at 2-5 and in third place in their division.

Things are not looking good in Minnesota, and with a battered Favre, and a defying coach: the organization could be in for major changes.

20 Teams Passed On Randy Moss, What's Wrong with Him?

A 5-3 team snatched up Randy Moss.

A team that was in dire need of a receiver after No. 1 receiver Kenny Britt went down with an injury.

How did that happen?

There are 20 teams with worse records and a better chance at claiming Randy Moss than the Titans.

Many of those teams have huge needs at receiver.

The Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams, Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, and Carolina Panthers just to name a few.

But those teams saw something they didn't like in the Randy Moss situation.

They saw a man who publicly ridicules situations he doesn't like: Tom Brady's hair and the food in Minnesota.

And they saw little production in Minnesota.

Locker room problems, little production, and absorbing the rest of Moss' contract were enough to scare away 20 teams, but not the Titans.

With a veteran coach and a chance to overtake Indianapolis in their division, the Titans gambled.

But more about that on the next slide.

The Titans Are Gambling at a Playoff Run

Titans coach Jeff Fisher is one of the longest tenured, most respected coaches in the NFL.

So I think he may just know what he is doing.

After spending many years attempting playoff runs without a No. 1 receiver, Fisher and the Titans jumped at the opportunity to land a proven No. 1 in Randy Moss.

They are a half game behind the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South division, and they have Vince Young coming off a stellar losing performance against the San Diego Chargers.

Even though they lost, Young threw for over 250 yards and two touchdowns, and seems to be recovered from his injury from a few weeks before.

Add in one of the most explosive running backs in the NFL in Chris Johnson, and the addition of Randy Moss could be just what the Titans need to overtake the Colts.

But on the contrary, Moss could ruin a good thing in Tennessee.

If his out-spoken, chemistry busting behavior continues the Titans could find themselves on the wrong end of a gambling decision in the NFL.

If anyone can control Moss it will be Fisher because of the level of respect he commands, but let's stay tuned to that situation.

The Rest of the AFC Could Be in Trouble

SAN DIEGO - OCTOBER 31: Quarterback Vince Young #10 of the Tennessee Titans carries running back Chris Johnson #28 over his shoulders after Johnson scored a touchdown against the San Diego Chargers in the second quarter at Qualcomm Stadium on October 31,

Chris Johnson has had a relatively quite first half of the season thus far.

Teams have been gambling by stuffing the box with defenders because of the Titans lack of deep threats on offense.

Well with one acquisition, that has changed today.

Randy Moss now means that teams will have to keep an extra defender or two back in order to prepare for Moss.

Throw the off the field issues out the window, when it comes to deep threat, nobody is better than Moss.

And that means that Chris Johnson could be free to run wild again soon.

With a bye this week, that means that Randy Moss will make his Titan debut on November 14th against the Miami Dolphins.

The same Dolphins that are giving up 232 passing yards and 111 rushing yards per game this season.

Being ranked 12th and 16th in those respective categories isn't bad, but something has to give when facing Moss, Young and Johnson.

The unfortunate Dolphins will be the first team to get to see the new fire power the Titans are packing, and a big game against them could put the rest of the AFC and NFL on notice.

The notice is that the Titans are making a run at the Super Bowl, and you can't stack the box to stop them anymore.
