Tennesse Titans Claim Randy Moss: Can Jeff Fisher Keep Him Under Control?

Andy BaileyNov 3, 2010

The Tennessee Titans have claimed recently waived, future Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss off waivers.  Moss has five days to report to the Titans, if he doesn't the team can put him on the reserve squad and he would be out for the rest of the year.

I expect him to report and to have an impact for the Titans this year.  Whether that impact is positive or negative remains to be seen.

Moss joins an already talented team that is in the hunt for the playoffs and an AFC South title.  Their biggest competition at this point is the Indianapolis Colts.

This move doesn't make them better than Peyton Manning and the rest of the Colts, but it will help them compete.  Indy's pass defense is ranked seventh in the NFL right now, so it will help to have another good receiver to throw at them.

They already have some promising things happening in the passing game.  Vince Young is currently ranked first in the league in passer rating at 103.1.  Kenny Britt has had a pretty strong season with 434 yards and seven touchdowns on 23 receptions.  Adding Moss to the mix will take some attention off Britt and give Young a reliable down field threat.

Adding Moss could also relieve some of the pressure on Chris Johnson to carry this team.  Right now, he's third in the NFL in yards with 721 and in carries with 178.  This team will still rely on Chris Johnson, but defenses won't be able to focus on him quite as much now that Moss is in the mix.

Now, all these good things can happen, assuming Moss isn't a distraction, which he very well could be.  There's a reason he's about to lace 'em up for his third different team in one season.  The New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings both sent him packing because they felt his attitude was doing more harm than his game was doing good.

The Titans have a tough, no nonsense coach in Jeff Fisher, and he may be able to control Randy.  Then again, the Patriots coach is no slouch either.

The only person who can really control Moss is himself.  Maybe the fact that he's about to play for his third team in the last month and a half will humble him a bit.  Maybe he'll finally realize a team is about more than him.  Maybe he won't...

If I had to make a prediction though, I'd say he's ready to fall in line.  Fisher will get the most he possibly can out of him, and the Tennessee Titans will have a shot at the AFC South title down the stretch run of this season.
