College Football: Week 10 Predictions for Every D-I FBS Game

Jake WestrichNov 2, 2010

Each Monday morning, Whatifsports.com's NCAA college football simulation engine will provide you with game predictions for every D-1 FBS game that upcoming week. The college football simulation engine generates detailed information for each game, including the home team's chances of winning (Home Win %) and the average points scored for both teams. Make sure to share the college football information you gained here with your friends by either checking out our NCAA football widgets on the WhatIf To Go page or clicking on the social networking share bar at the top and bottom of this article.

Check out our 2010 College Football Season-to-Date page to follow our accuracy and for Locks and Upsets of the Week available on Wednesdays.

The statistical inputs to the thousands of college football simulations are based on rigorous analysis of each team's roster, depth charts and statistically based player rankings. Roster modifications are made in cases of injury or suspension and those players are removed from their team's game simulation for that week.

Game of the Week: TCU at Utah

TCU and Utah should get a quote from the car insurance pitchman and random windstorm known as Mayhem. Because, by the looks of their remaining schedule, their shot at qualifying for the BCS national title game is shakyโ€”shaky, shaky, shakyโ€”at best.

The two undefeated programs are currently stuck in mid-major prison. Granted, Saturday's winner will be allowed to pass go and collect their 200 dollars, but the BCS system will be damned if it'll let them buy Boardwalk or Park Place.

TCU is currently ranked third in the BCS standings (.8911, thanks mainly to their win over Oregon State) and Utah is fifth (.7318, thanks mainly to their win over Pittsburgh). However, when you compare the duo's BCS averages to the top two Oregon (.9777) and (Auburn .9599), potential wins over San Diego State and New Mexico (TCU's final two games) don't scream BCS lock.

The profound fact of the matter is the competition in the Mountain West Conference doesn't carry with it the reputation or the quality needed for the Horned Frogs and Utes to attract BCS attention. It's the reason why Urban Meyer left for Florida and why Utah is jumping to the Pac-10 next season. These two teams are loaded with talent, but the Win/Loss record and stats accumulated through the first nine weeks carry with it the rhetorical stigma of "Who did you play?"

That's enough of the Debbie Downer analysis.

The silver lining is the Utes host the Horned Frogs Saturday in Salt Lake City. One team from the MWC will empower their BCS resume with a win and insure their chances of crashing the BCS party once again. Whatifsports.com has TCU ranked third and Utah ranked 9th in this week's power rankings.

The Horned Frogs offensive attack comes on the ground where they rank ninth in the country in rush yards per game (270.9 yds/gm). But, it's on defense where Gary Patterson's crew can toot their horn(s).

They are the only team in the country allowing less than 10 points per game (8.7 pa/gm). They are also first in pass yards allowed per game (119.0) and ninth in rush yards allowed per game (98.3). When you mix the lock down defense with the 40-plus points TCU rings up each week, it's no surprise they are undefeated.

Utah is more balanced on offense. Both their passing (258.1) and rushing (191.5) attacks rank in the top 35 in the country. Although they only managed 28 points this past weekend against Air Force, the Utes are third in the country in points per game (45.3). Their win over Iowa State sticks out the most because they racked up 68 points on the same Cyclones team that upset Texas a few weeks back.

Similar to a previous Game of the Week, the hyper-offense matchup between Oregon and Stanford, the Utes and Frogs have the defenses to slow each other down. Utah is sixth in points allowed per game at 14.1.

Whatifsports.com's college football simulation engine "played" this game 101 times and the Horned Frogs of TCU win 72.8-percent of the time by an average score of 33-26.
