College Football Week 9: Top Five Clever Topics for So Very Clever Guy's Girls

Hilary LiDestriOct 29, 2010

As we roll into week 9 of college football, I have to address a question from a reader.  “Why do you like college football more than pro?”  An excellent query.  First of all, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE can’t get enough OF college football and will watch pro in a pinch.

I am pretty much anit-pro sports other than hockey for a multitude of reasons- most of which are not relevant to my article today, but if you are truly interested- check out my post, “Is a Purse too Much to Ask For?” on www.soveryclever.blogspot.com under “sports.”

Now- what is relevant are the Top Five Clever Topics for So Very Clever Guy’s Girls- Week 9.

Let’s get started with a reiteration of the Clever initiative.  During games (whether watching them at home, in person or while hanging with the guys) it is essential your conversations do not depart from the sport at hand.  While it is OK for guys to talk about everything from a hot dog eating contest to the bikini Halle Berry wore in Casino Royale- it is NOT OK for you to chime in about the play you and your sister saw the evening prior.  So, here are some topics designed to turn the spot light squarely on you as you ask (notice I said “ask” and not “tell” the guys about these items).

The point to all this is … Clever Guy’s Girls know how to prove their knowledge and generate conversation without making the guys look uneducated or uninformed.  Clever Girls can effortlessly redirect the conversation if it goes over their heads by saying- “Interesting, I hadn’t thought of that.  What about ...?”

Cam Newton Still Reigns Supreme- Where Is Denard? Will He Re-Emerge?

In the current top three of the Heisman Pundit poll- while Cam Newton sits firmly in first, LaMichael James of Oregon and Kellen Moore of Boise State are still in two and three, respectively. That part is easy- but what is interesting is that neither of the two and three schools have secured a Heisman Trophy.

So, while I am behind Cam Newton if Denard Robinson (Michigan) cannot reclaim his rightful place (heavy was the head that wore the crown)- what an amazing victory a Heisman would be for Oregon or Boise State. Now, Clever Girls- we don’t state, “Did you know …”- instead try, “Has Oregon ever won a Heisman? I know Oregon State has won one, (Terry Baker, 1962- and I don’t recommend you come up with the winner unless you can lie and say your dad went there- otherwise it smacks of research) haven’t they?”

And Then There Were Seven- Who Will Be Upset In Week 9?

We still have seven undefeated teams out there and I firmly believe at the end of the weekend- we still will. Auburn is gearing up to head to Mississippi for what some believe is an automatic win. I’m not so certain. This is the first time Auburn has been recognized as the top BCS team since its inception. There is a ton of pressure on this team- this is week nine with no break and they have a stellar Heisman-caliber quarterback. A Clever way to address this is, “Wow, has Auburn ever been number one in the BCS?”

If someone must go down this weekend, the only game I am not emotionally tied to is Mizzou and Nebraska.  We shall see.

Which Nebraska Team Is Going To Show Up Against Mizzou? Potential Upset Alert

THE game of the weekend (other than University of Michigan OVER Penn State) is Mizzou over Nebraska. Mizzou is flying high after a HUGE upset over Oklahoma (not only did I predict but begged for)- I am hoping they don’t enter the contest with Nebraska overconfident- that would be a huge mistake depending on what Nebraska team makes the trip. Notable here is the emotion in play- Clever Girls- this is an age old rivalry- one of the most storied in college football.

Not Even The Mighty (Over Rated?) Iowa Defense Is a Match For MSU's Offense

MSU is still undefeated- it’s officially time for me to start telling everyone I am an alum- even those people who still think I went to University of Michigan. It doesn’t help the illusion that I have one Michigan State sweatshirt (bought my freshman year- has logged 12 wearings) and the fact my treasure trove of University of Michigan gear is both tattered and stained.

While this will be a huge defensive battle- I don’t think even the mighty Iowa defense can stop Cousins, Cunningham, Martin and Dell. Dream team. A Clever Girl might inquire, “Iowa pulled it out against Wisconsin- do you think they can hand Michigan State their first loss?”

For the record- I think NOT.

When WAS The Last Time Baylor and TCU Were The Top Rated Teams In Texas?

Another easy topic a Clever Girl might inquire about is the last time Baylor and TCU were the top ranked teams in Texas. I can guarantee it was before Mack Brown’s time. Would be interesting to see if any of the boys knew the answer.

On that note- there is some controversy as to what the upset will be this week in Austin. Baylor is ranked in the top 25 and Texas is not- so theoretically there is your upset if Texas defeats them- HOWEVER, I am going to call it and upset if Baylor beats up on Texas. They have everything they need to make this team work and work it will.

I am looking for G2 (Garrett Gilbert) to settle into the role as leader with some help from the brass.  He has what it takes, he just needs more time.  Literally.  Time.  The pocket must stop collapsing on him.
