Fantasy Football Week 8: 10 Waiver Wire Pickups to Save Your Season
Fantasy Football Week 8 will essentially bring us to the midway point of the 2010 season.
By now, many of you know where you stand as far as your draft. It was either terrible, or it was damn good. Or it was okay.
Then there are those of you who have been screwed by circumstances. As you well know, things happen in the NFL: injuries, increased reps, decreased reps, rising stars, falling stars and so on.
If your team is in need of a little help, have no fear. We've got you covered.
Here are 10 waiver wire pickups that could help salvage your season.
10. St. Louis Rams Defense
1 of 10
Don't worry—you don't have to hold on to St. Louis' defense after this week. But they are a good one-and-done replacement if your defense has a bye.
The Rams will be facing Carolina at home this weekend. They rank sixth in football with 20 sacks, and Carolina is sixth in the league with 18 sacks allowed so far this season.
Also, visitors to St. Louis are averaging just over 13 points a game.
You could do worse.
9. Andrew Quarless, TE, Green Bay Packers
2 of 10
Chances are that Quarless has already been picked up in your league by the poor bastard who had Jermichael Finley, one of the more reliable tight ends in fantasy.
Quarless, a rookie out of Penn State, put up modest numbers his first couple games. But last night's touchdown, controversial or not, could get Aaron Rodgers to look Quarless' way more often in the future.
Green Bay also has Donald Lee in its tight end rotation, but Quarless has more catches than him.
If you can get him, go ahead and do so. He won't put up big yardage numbers, but you'll take 20 yards and a score out of your tight end any day.
8. Jon Kitna, QB, Dallas Cowboys
3 of 10
Obviously, Jon Kitna is no Tony Romo—and Tony Romo wasn't even that good.
But if you need a quarterback to fill in for your starter (due to a bye or whatnot), you could do worse than Kitna.
Filling in for Romo last night, Kitna finished with 187 yards and two touchdowns with no picks. The yards definitely weren't worth much, but two scores is always an acceptable number out of your quarterback.
The Cowboys face the Jaguars this weekend, who can definitely be passed on. They give up over 250 yards through the air per game.
7. Mike Hart, RB, Indianapolis Colts
4 of 10
Donald Brown is expected to inherit most of the load left by Joseph Addai's shoulder injury. But despite the fact Brown will have had two weeks between games, he's also dinged up with a bad hamstring, which can spell death for running backs.
So pick up Hart. He's been given 22 carries in Indy's last two games and picked up his first career touchdown against Kansas City.
If Brown does end up playing, Hart might not be a bad pickup anyway. As the more versatile back of the two, Brown will do most of his work between the 20s, leaving plenty of work to be had in the red zone for Hart.
6. Blair White, WR, Indianapolis Colts
5 of 10
The Colts' receiving corps is also pretty banged up right now. Austin Collie is out indefinitely after thumb surgery, Dallas Clark is out for the year and Anthony Gonzalez is still battling a bad ankle.
Their loss (and Peyton Manning's) is Blair White's gain. White is not a speed burner type who is going to catch one deep ball and call it a day. But he is a possession receiver that could thrive in the middle of the field.
If he can get open, rest assured Manning will find him.
The Colts are going up against the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football, and it bodes well for White and the Colts that Houston can't defend the pass whatsoever (worst in football, in fact).
5. Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, Buffalo Bills
6 of 10
You have every reason to be wary of picking up a Bills offensive player, or any Bills player for that matter.
But Fitzpatrick has done pretty well in Buffalo's last three games, passing for 722 yards, nine TDs and only two picks.
The Bills face a tough Kansas City team on the road on Sunday. But despite the fact the Chiefs' defense has been pretty heavily praised so far this season, they can also be passed on, giving up more than 240 yards per game.
4. LeGarrette Blount, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
7 of 10
You may remember LeGarrette Blount more for his boxing skills than his football career. He was the guy that decked a Boise State player while he was still at Oregon, an act of numbskullery that got him suspended for the rest of the season.
These days, he's making noise in Tampa Bay. Blount is coming off his best game as a pro, rushing a career-high 11 times for 72 yards.
Cadillac Williams may be the featured back in Tampa, but Blount may emerge as the better option given Williams' troubles between the tackles.
Especially—and this is where you should start listening—around the goal line.
3. Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Minnesota Vikings
8 of 10
The word hasn't come down about whether or not Brett Favre is going to play this weekend, and it probably won't until right before game time.
But don't wait to pick up Jackson. Sure, he's nothing spectacular, but Brad Childress isn't just going to have him hand off to Adrian Peterson on every play.
Besides, Minnesota certainly has playmakers at wide receiver, chief among them Randy Moss. Jackson got a bad rap when he was the quarterback before Favre, but he didn't have Moss or Percy Harvin at his disposal.
2. Patrick Crayton, WR, San Diego Chargers
9 of 10
Nobody seemed to care when the Chargers made the trade for Patrick Crayton. But with Malcom Floyd hurting and Antonio Gates at less than 100 percent, maybe they should care now.
Crayton is another guy you'll be lucky to get, as there's always at least one guy who reads over all the box scores before you even pick up your Monday morning paper.
Crayton has hauled in 13 catches for 199 yards in the Chargers' last two games. He hasn't found the end zone yet this year, but that's bound to change with Philip Rivers throwing passes his way.
Plus, Vincent Jackson is still a couple weeks away, so owners can ride Crayton at least until Jackson comes back, and maybe beyond.
1. David Gettis, WR, Carolina Panthers
10 of 10
Yes, there are other receivers on Carolina besides just Steve Smith. This guy had himself a day on Sunday.
Matt Moore took the Panthers' starting quarterback job back and immediately spent his time looking for Gettis, the sixth-round draft pick out of Baylor.
Gettis was targeted nine times by Moore, catching eight passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. His was the fourth-best stat line for any wide receiver in the league.
He's probably already been picked up in most leagues after a day like yesterday. If not, go get him.
