BCS Championship 2010: Cam Newton Continues To Lead Undefeated Auburn

Daniel DinunzioOct 26, 2010

It seems as if there isn't a defense in the country that can stop, or even contain Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.  He continues to win games for the Auburn Tigers and has put them in the driver's seat towards a potential National Championship game in early January.

LSU was supposed to have a game plan to answer Newton's running ability.  He responded by torching the LSU defense with 217 of his team's 440 yards rushing while adding two touchdowns.  Auburn has been successful this year largely in part to Newton's talents.

Everybody at the beginning of the year was praising Denard Robinson as this year's Heisman Trophy winner.  Sorry to tell you, he was doing it against defenses such as UConn, Notre Dame and Indiana.

Not the most quality opponents to say the least.

Newton's numbers continue to impress in the SEC.  The strongest and most competitive division in college football.  He is the clear Heisman front-runner at this point, and with upcoming games at Ole Miss, Chattanooga, and Georgia, he is only going to continue to rack up the yards and touchdowns.

Newton is only the second quarterback ever to rush for over 1,000 yards in the SEC, and Auburn still has four games left before a possible SEC title game in Atlanta.  Newton has rushed for 14 touchdowns, and through the air has passed for almost 1,400 yards to go along with 13 more touchdowns.

The numbers are staggering.  Anybody who actually thinks that Kellen Moore, Andrew Luck, or LaMichael James is going to overtake Cam Newton for the Heisman Trophy is crazy.  Newton stands at 6'6" 250 lbs and anytime he gets into the secondary he is almost impossible to bring down.

What the season could come down to is a trip to Tuscaloosa the Friday after Thanksgiving.  The Iron Bowl could decide who wins the SEC West and will have major BCS Championship implications.

Nick Saban is going to have to find a way to stop Newton.  No coach has found a way to do it yet, but Saban has won two national championships and has a very talented Alabama squad.

With that being said, Gene Chizik has his team on a mission that includes an undefeated season.  Every game is a new obstacle that Cam Newton is focused on taking on full sprint ahead. Pretty remarkable for the kid who two years ago was stuck behind John Brantley and Tim Tebow at Florida.

Tim Tebow had a phenomenal season in 2007 that resulted in a Heisman Trophy.  It looks as if Cam Newton is very close to lifting the same hardware the second weekend in December.

It's crunch-time for Auburn.  Let's see if they can stay atop the BCS Standings over the next six weeks.
