Jeremy Williams To Hartford, What Should the New York Rangers Do With Todd White

Nick PerriOct 25, 2010

The New York Rangers reassigned winger Jeremy Williams to the Hartford Wolf Pack before this morning's skate.

Williams was called to the NHL Sunday afternoon as a precaution for the New York Rangers. Head coach John Tortorella was unsure on the status of winger Brandon Prust, and decided to give Williams a shot in the NHL.

Prust was cleared to play against the Devils Sunday night, but Jeremy Williams was still placed in the lineup. Tortorella decided to scratch veteran forward Todd White from the lineup, and put Williams in his place instead.

Jeremy Williams was given six shifts and about four minutes of ice-time in his New York Rangers debut.

"I don't know what he is as a player. It really isn't fair to him. I don't think he has a ton of confidence in his play and I have a lot to do with that as far as the spots I've put him in and how I've spotted him in certain areas.

"I'm concerned about his speed and I've talked to him about that. But I don't think I've given him a fair shake."

That is what John Tortorella told Larry Brooks of the NY Post regarding Todd White and his situation as a New York Ranger.

White was acquired by the Rangers in early August in a trade that sent Donald Brashear and Patrick Rissmiller to the Atlanta Thrashers. It was speculated that White would been sent to Hartford as a salary dump during training camp, but the Rangers general manager, Glen Sather, did not place White on waivers until the first week of October.

The Rangers have until the first week of November to reassign Todd White to Hartford, or else they will have to waive him once again if they would like to erase his salary cap hit.

Todd White has not clicked with any of the Rangers forwards, and it just seems like he is not fit on this season's roster. If the Rangers would like to get rid of him their other option, beside sending him to the minors, would be to trade him.

At his age, and cap-hit, it is hard to believe any team would take him in a trade. The best option for the Rangers is to send him to Hartford, opening cap space and roster space in the NHL. They could then call upon another prospect to take White's place on the Rangers, and White will get some playing time in the minors.

There are many young players in Hartford that deserve a chance to play in the NHL, and this could be there chance. If anything is to happen with Todd White, trade or demotion, expect it to happen sometime this week.

That's all for now.
