David Gettis, Ryan Fitzpatrick: The 10 Most Surprising Performances of Week 7
The 2010 NFL season has been full of surprises so far this season—from the 1-4 Dallas Cowboys to the 4-2 Kansas City Chiefs—and Week 7 was no exception.
There were big plays and performances made in every phase of the game on Sunday, with a lot of new faces coming up big for their teams.
Carolina Panthers wide receiver David Gettis put his team on his back and willed them to their first victory of the season, while Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick put on an excellent performance, coming up just short against the Ravens.
Gettis and Fitzpatrick were amongst the 10 most surprising performances of Week 7; here is a list of all of them.
David Gettis
1 of 10
Gettis came out of nowhere to spark the Panthers offense to the first victory of their season in Carolina's dramatic 23-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Gettis had a career day, catching eight passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns as he gained more yards in the win than he had in the previous four games combined.
The former Baylor standout's two touchdowns were the Panthers' only trips to the end zone that day, and his effort helped propel quarterback Matt Moore to a 308-yard performance.
Gettis and the Panthers will try for two straight in Week 8 with a winnable game at the St. Louis Rams.
Ryan Fitzpatrick
2 of 10
Fitzpatrick had a huge game for Buffalo, throwing for 374 yards and four touchdowns as the Bills came up just short in their 37-34 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
The 27-year-old Arizona native continuously beat the Ravens pass defense with big plays through the air, throwing for three touchdown passes of 20-plus yards.
The Harvard grad has played well for the Bills this season, throwing 11 touchdowns to just four interceptions with a passer rating of 102.
Fitzpatrick will face another tough defense on Sunday when he travels to Arrowhead to take on the Chiefs.
Steve Johnson
3 of 10
Someone had to catch all of those yards that Fitzpatrick threw for, and that someone was wide receiver Steve Johnson.
Johnson was another receiver who had a career day in Week 7, catching eight passes for 158 yards and a touchdown.
The former seventh-round pick had just 112 career receiving yards entering the season, but he has already caught 25 passes for 372 yards and five touchdowns.
Like his quarterback, Johnson will have a stiff test in Week 8, especially if he is matched up with one of the league's fastest rising corner backs in Brandon Flowers.
LeGarrette Blount
4 of 10
Blount didn't have as big of a day as the prior three players on this list, but he did have a solid game. The fact that he has even made it this far is surprising.
Blount is best known for his time at the University of Oregon when he sucker-punched a Boise State player last season following his team's defeat. Blount was suspended for much of the season but eventually returned with little impact.
The Titans took a chance on the troubled player, signing him as an undrafted free agent before the Bucs claimed him off waivers from Tennessee.
Blount ran hard against the Rams, rushing for 72 yards on 11 carries and he should be an interesting player to follow for the rest of the season.
The 6'0", 247-pound back faces the Cardinals in Week 8 with an opportunity to have another solid game against the league's 29th ranked rushing defense.
Todd Bouman
5 of 10
Bouman's numbers at the end of the day were not spectacular; he threw for 222 yards and two interceptions in the Jaguars 42-20 loss at Kansas City.
Bouman did throw for two touchdowns, though, and kept the Jags in the game well into the third quarter, which was more than was expected of him.
The 38-year-old was signed earlier in the week after starting quarterback David Garrard was determined unable to play due to concussion. Bouman was cut earlier in the season by Jacksonville, but the team decided to bring him back and he did an admirable job in a tough environment facing a solid Chiefs defense.
The 3-4 Jaguars will try to bounce next week against the Dallas Cowboys in a virtual must-win game.
Jordan Shipley
6 of 10
Shipley was a great player in college during his time at Texas, and so far he has been a solid player in the NFL.
The third-round pick out shined the TOCHO show as he caught six passes for 131 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown grab. It was a career day for Shipley, and it appears that he will be a successful receiver in the league for years to come.
The Bengals have struggled this season and will need to turn things around fast; perhaps Shipley can help them do that when they take on the Miami Dolphins next weekend.
David Bowens
7 of 10
Bowens was another defender that a career day in Week 7, intercepting two Drew Brees passes and returning them for touchdowns.
The 33-year-old had just two interceptions in his 12-year career entering the game, so the fact that he got two against the Saints and returned them both to the end zone was about as shocking as it gets.
Bowens is on his fifth team in the NFL since being drafted by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round of the 1999 draft.
Cleveland has been up and down this season, but they are clearly a team moving in the right direction.
DeAngelo Hall
8 of 10
DeAngelo Hall is by far the most accomplished player on this list, having gone to the Pro Bowl twice in his career, but the fact that he picked off four passes in one game was pretty surprising, even for him.
The fact that those passes came from Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was not as surprising, but Hall had a great game nonetheless.
Hall returned one of the interceptions 92 yards for what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown.
The former Virginia Tech star single-handedly won the game for the Redskins this week, but he will have a tougher task next week trying to slow down Detroit Lions wide receiver, Calvin Johnson.
Reggie Hodges
9 of 10
Reggie Hodges is the Cleveland Browns punter, so the fact that you seem him running with the football in his hands is surprising enough alone, but Hodges took a fake punt for 68 yards.
Peyton Hillis ran for 69 yards in the Browns 30-17 win, besting Hodges by just one yard for the team's leading rusher on the day.
This feat would have been less surprising if it was done by Bills punter, Brian Moorman, who has performed well in the Pro Bowl's fastest player contest in the past, but Hodges did quite well given the opportunity.
Hodges has an opportunity to rest his legs this week as the Browns have a bye before taking on the Patriots at home in Week 9.
The Oakland Raiders
10 of 10
The fact that the Oakland Raiders beat the Denver Broncos in Denver came as a surprise to most, but the fact that they won the game 59-14 came as a surprise to all.
Oakland dominated the game from the opening kickoff while jumping out to a quick 21-0 lead just seven minutes into the game.
The Raiders are now alone in second place in the AFC West, one-and-a-half games back of the Chiefs. Oakland has the NFC West, leading Seattle Seahawks at home in Week 8. There they will try to win back-to-back games for the first time since 2008.
