US Open: Roger Federer Can Prove the World Wrong

Andrew McNairAug 21, 2008

The US Open is right around the corner and it can't come quickly enough for my two favourite tennis stars.

Roger Federer may have flopped in the Olympic singles, but he recovered like a champion to claim gold in the doubles for Switzerland.

His main rival on the other hand was winning gold for Spain in what was a very physical competition. Rafael Nadal won't be at his freshest heading into New York, and it's a great chance for Federer to fight back.

I'm fed up reading rubbish about Federer being finished as a Grand Slam winner. It's utter rubbish.

Even if Nadal did win most Grand Slams from now on, who do you think would be winning the others?

There is a lot of talk about Nadal's ability to win this late in the season, but I don't believe a word of it. Nadal is fitter, stronger and better than this time last year and is the favourite for the US Open.

Federer though, is the second seed and may relish the underdog status. A fresher Federer bodes well for a great tournament and even a final appearance should silence his critics.

I'll be backing Roger and firmly believe he has what it takes. After all, since when hasn't he had the ability to win a Grand Slam?

Madness, I tell you.

As you all know, no article of mine on tennis would be complete without a word on Scotland's Andy Murray.

The No. 6 seed had a nightmare in Beijing but will be all the fresher for it. The youngster believes he has what it takes to do well, and who can argue with him after his pre-Olympic hard court form?

He faces Sergio Roitman of Argentina in round one, and it would be silly of me to mention the second round.

With Murray, it's very much one round at a time!
