Top Five Clever Topics for Guy's Girls: Week 8
Hey there-
I have to make some clarifications here, while I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE male readers, nine of ten, you are likely already to know the information I post here weekly. So, if I make a suggestion or a point that seems condescending, please, Clever Guys, don't take offense--I'm on your team!
The purpose of my b|r articles and my blog, www.soveryclever.com, is to introduce women slowly and casually to the most abhorred word in the entire female lexicon: SPORTS.
This is of real benefit to you, Clever Guys--the point is she is immersed and realizes she really enjoys football, baseball or hockey and wants to join you occasionally, or she comes to the conclusion that while you LIVE and BREATHE sports- she is just not into it and has been given permission, by So Very Clever, to make plans with the girls where she can unload all the "girl talk" she's been saving up. Better anyone but you, eh?
So, here we go, So Very Clever Guy's Girls- some topics you can casually bring up at the tailgate or during the watching party. Watch the spotlight shift to you as the guys rabidly leap upon the subjects and edify you. Men love to express their opinions- especially about sports, so ask away. Remember--you are not "telling them something they don't know," you are asking a question. Defer to the guys. They love it.
Welcome to The Big Ten, Nebraska! Ready For an Ass Kicking?
1 of 5
I'm pretty excited about welcoming Nebraska into the Big Ten, which officially is NOT Big Ten anymore. I do feel we weren't very gracious when the schedule was made for them- goodness, not a single BREAK for them. They have a heavy and hard-hitting schedule.
Open with Wisconsin- Ohio State- Minnesota- Northwestern- Michigan State- Penn State- Michigan then Iowa. Whoa.
Clever Girls--Nebraska is an easy subject to bring up, as they are coming off a HUGE loss to University of Texas. No one saw it coming, least of all Nebraska. I'm proud of Gilbert Garrett ("G2") and the way those Horns went out and held the Cornhuskers' hard-charging offense and performed against a strong defense.
Cam Newton Has All But Secured a Trip to New York
2 of 5
Cam Newton is surely impressing the powers that be as he slid into the top spot in the Heisman Race. I was sad to see Denard plummet, but if the o-line for the Wolverines is not going to protect him- who is?
Cam takes on another undefeated team of Tigers this weekend and a win over LSU could buy him the Heisman. Clever Girls, the Heisman Trophy is awarded each year by the Heisman Trophy Trust to the top player in college football. The tradition began in 1935 when Jay Bernwanger of the University of Chicago won the not-yet-coveted award and last year's winner was Mark Ingram of Alabama. Now, a Heisman for Auburn would end a 25-year drought since Bo Jackson won in 1985.
If Denard Robinson can't take it home, I'll get behind Cam- he's putting in some hard work. I like it.
The Battle of The Unbeatens
3 of 5
Clever Girls, there are currently 10 unbeaten teams heading into week 8 and two games will knock two of them out. Oklahoma makes the trip to take on Missouri and I have to take Mizzou in this one. I'm not a fan of OU (still mad about Sam Bradford's Heisman). I'm not convinced OU is worth the hype- let's see if I'm wrong.
Also this weekend--a huge game between LSU and Auburn. I am going to take Auburn because I like what I see and I'm still annoyed Les Miles didn't go to University of Michigan and left us with RichRod (who is soon to have a new nickname given by ME). Yes, you can see, I can carry a grudge with ease--I'm a Capricorn, it's simply who I am.
So, when you are watching with the guys, here are a couple of fantastic statements that will turn heads: "Wow, after this weekend, there might be only eight undefeated teams" or "A win over LSU is going to cement Cam Newton for the Heisman, won't it?"
Michigan State Is Wearing a Target--How Good a Shot Is Northwestern
4 of 5
OK, Clever Girls--Michigan State Spartans are prepared for a pilgrimage as they head out of my home state for the first time this season. Though I am a State alum, it is no secret where my loyalty lies. However, I am quite proud of this team.
I doubt Northwestern will provide much of a challenge for Kirk Cousins as he fires downfield to Mark Dell, BJ Cunningham and Keshawn Martin, but stranger things have happened. Northwestern is coming off a bye (a break of one week) and have undoubtedly spent a lot of time formulating a plan to knock the offense off their game.
I'm behind the Green this week--curious to see if they can make it to the championship.
Wisconsin and Iowa--The Teams That Took Down The Big Ten
5 of 5
This is a really interesting game, Clever Girls. These two teams handed out losses to the two teams who, early in the year were slated to meet up for the Big 10 Championship. The landscape of that championship has changed and might even include Iowa if they keep it together.
I don't hold out much hope for Wisconsin in this battle, however, I didn't ultimately expect the Buckeyes to drop the ball. The Ohio State v. Wisconsin game is always a wild card and boy, was that WILD.
Less wild and more predictable was the beating Iowa served up to Michigan. I won't say I was entirely disappointed with UM's play, but a loss is a loss and it seems Iowa might have set Michigan on what is now looking like a losing streak.
The road to the championship will be no tortuous for Iowa as they host the Spartans next and that will be a defensive battle- then, the Buckeyes. No easy wins there. They will have to fight for this one. I can pretty much get behind ANYONE except Ohio State.
