UFC 91: Daddy Will Have Problems Going With The Kenflo

Nick ColonAug 20, 2008

A father is someone that tends to care for his own, and looks over family. He sometimes has problems, and needs guidance. However, a daddy sometimes roll with the punches, or in this case, go with the flow.

UFC Matchmaker Joe Silva recently created a bout between Joe "Daddy" Stevenson and Kenny "Kenflo" Florian that is expected to headline the UFC 91 card set to take place in Oregon. Though nothing has been set in stone yet, the matchup seems all but assured headliner status.

If this remains true, then a very decisive battle will ensue, which based on recent history shows favor in Kenflo's corner.

Florian, coming off a good win over highly-touted Mexican fighter Roger Huerta, is on a roll, winning his last five fights.

However, Stevenson is in a little bit different of a situation than Florian, with a poor showing in his last fight. With a guillotine choke over Gleison Tibau, Daddy escaped a two round beatdown, and what would have been his second straight loss.

Each of these two fighters' last fights tell something about the way they proceed in a fight. Stevenson is a little hesitant to show his stuff, and only when forced to, does he take his game to the next level. However against B.J. Penn, and recently Tibau, he wasn't able to showcase himself. Oh, and his stand up was very sloppy.

As for Florian, he likes to set the pace from the outset of the fight, and let his opponents try to catch-up to the vigorous style he emits. His stand up is very improved from prior fights, and his ground game is just as good.

So keeping the recent past in mind, I will go out on a limb and say Florian is the favorite in this fight. He will probably win it as well, en route to a title shot against Penn. But, then again, with Stevenson as with MMA, you can never predict the outcome with 100% accuracy. Good luck to both fighters.
