Does Auburn QB Cam Newton Deserve the Heisman Based on "Integrity?"

Shashin PatelOct 19, 2010

In case someone hasn't heard since they have been living under a rock, Cam Newton is currently college football's most incredible player.  He has mind-blowing statistics against tough competition and in the gauntlet known as the SEC.  All major analysts and writers have him as the leading Heisman candidate.

However, as always, there are those who have excuses.  But usually, that excuse is related somehow to the player's performance on the field.  Not so much in case of Cam Newton, and that has been the biggest compliment and confirmation of the ability.

No one, not even rival fans, have anything to say on why Cam Newton doesn't deserve the top individual award based on his on-field performance.  Their excuse stems from his "lack of integrity."

Cam Newton, during his years at University of Florida, got in trouble for buying a stolen laptop.  According to him, he didn't know the laptop was stolen (confirmed to be true), and threw it out in panic.  First of all, he did not harm anyone else but himself in the process (and that's even IF he did anything wrong on purpose).

Here is what the critics thought of that: WHO CARES? HE DOESN'T HAVE INTEGRITY.

Never mind that besides his astounding performances and leadership on the field, he is known to be very humble and down-to-earth to anyone who met him.

Here is what the critics thought of that:  WHO CARES? HE DOESN'T HAVE INTEGRITY.

Never mind that, these are just kids, who once in a while will make mistakes.  Again, he did not harm anyone else in the process.  Its not like he sent a message saying "Time to die B*#*h" to his girlfriend, it's not like he got arrested for DUIs or battery and assault charges.

Are you saying these kids should not be given a second chance (even IF he didn't do anything wrong in the first place).  So then what is the whole point of EDUCATION.

Here is what the critics thought of that: WHO CARES? HE DOESN'T HAVE INTEGRITY.

Never mind that despite offers for countless interviews and spending time in countless practices, he spends time off the football field to mentor kids in school and being a good ambassador for Auburn wherever he goes.

Here is what the critics thought of that: WHO CARES? HE DOESN'T HAVE INTEGRITY.

Oh, and did I forget to mention he is currently the best player in college football?

Here is what the critics thought of that: WHO CARES? HE DOESN'T HAVE INTEGRITY.

The words suitable for those critics has no place in this article. But If Auburn wins at least three more games from this point on, and Newton is denied the Heisman for whatever reason, performance or "integrity," it would be a shame to the award and to the game, just like it would have been if a fully-deserving Mark Ingram had not won it last year.
