Tom KinslowOct 18, 2010

Tim Tebow scored the first NFL touchdown of his career on Sunday, and it made a ton of people out there very happy.

Before he even took a snap, Tebow led the NFL in jersey sales and was the most popular college football player during his time at Florida. People cannot get enough Tim Tebow even after he left Florida.

To answer the question as to why people are so enamored with Tebow and invested in his success, there are 10 reasons as to why Tebow is such a magnetic athlete.

No. 10: His Faith

Tim Tebow is a Christian. He's very upfront about that and nothing will ever change that.

Tebow is very open with his faith and works with Christian organizations and talks about it during interviews. That strikes a cord with Christians in America when they see an athlete who's proud of his faith and wears it on his sleeve is such a genuine manner.

Tebow is one of the more prominent faces of Christianity in sports and people latch on to someone like that.

No. 9: Respect of Teammates and Coaches

Some of the most popular athletes in sports may be beloved stars, but they aren't the most popular in their own locker room. Tim Tebow is not one of those people.

Everyone who talks about Tebow always talks about how impressed they are with him and the person he is. When a person is talented and all of the people around the person are impressed by that person's character, it's a recipe for popularity.

An athlete like that doesn't come around every day.

No. 8: Charity Work

Tim Tebow is a person who loves doing charity work. He spent one of his spring breaks at Florida doing missionary work and he's talked about how he's enjoyed visiting hospitals as a member of the Denver Broncos.

For most athletes, charity work is a chore, but for Tebow, it's a joy. He enjoys making people's day better and giving back to the community. When people see that, they want to see that person do good.

Being a nice guy goes a long way.

In today's NFL, it's all about protecting the quarterback. You can't hit them high and you can't hit them low. It's a contact sport but you can't hit the quarterback because they're money makers.

Tim Tebow isn't that type of player. Tebow embraces contact and he tries to run through people instead of trying to avoid them in the open field. That's an old school mentality and it's something that resonates with football fans.

No one will ever call Tebow soft.

As Tim Tebow prepared for the NFL Draft, there was a lot of talk about his throwing motion and how it could hurt his draft stock.

Tebow proceeded to work on his throwing motion non-stop, and in interviews he talked about how hard he was going to work no matter where he was drafted. He's a hard-worker and people respect hard work and that's why people like Tebow.

It may never amount to an NFL career, but you'll never be able to question his effort.

No. 5: Media Coverage

Since Tebow was splitting time with Chris Leak in Florida, the media has been all about discussing Tebow.

He's a media sensation and that's because he's always generous with his time and always friendly in interviews with members of the press. When you're friendly to reporters, they'll be friendly in return. He's been glorified by the media and it's only increased his fame.

Every week there's a Tim Tebow story if he's playing or not and that has created a sensation around him.

No. 4: Leadership Ability

When Tim Tebow was at Florida, he was the consummate leader and put that team on his back for all of the success they had during his tenure as the starting quarterback.

Leaders are loved and respected and with you do it with the pure determination that he did, it leads to inevitable fame from the public. Tebow is the type of guy you'd want to go to war with and that's why people loved having him on their team.

Even if he's not on the field, Tebow is a true leader.

No. 3: His Skill Set

When a quarterback can run like Tim Tebow can, it turns into a freak show of sorts. Running quarterbacks are media spectacles and always get more attention than traditional pocket passers.

Tebow runs the ball with no fear and takes on defenders and people love watching scrambling quarterbacks. He's a dual threat and you never know what you're going to get on any given play with Tebow and people love watching that.

There's a reason people get excited when he enters the game.

No. 2: Friendly

By all accounts, Tim Tebow is one of the friendliest people in sports. He's personable, charming and modest and people talk about how much they love his personality.

No one has ever said a bad word about Tim Tebow the person. Tebow doesn't let the criticism get to him and he has handled everything with poise and grace. Being friendly isn't something you can count on from people these days and the fact that Tebow is famous and hasn't changed a bit has won a lot of fans over.

Some players in Tebow's situation would be unhappy on the bench, but he's handled it with a lot of maturity.

No. 1: College Success

Tim Tebow is one of the most successful, if not the most successful college football player of all time.

He won a Heisman trophy and two national championships during his time at Florida and was always the biggest star in college football when he was in a Gators uniform. Playing at a big time program like Florida and having success drew a huge spotlight Tebow's way and those people that were Florida fans are now Tim Tebow fans and that's why he's still so wildly popular.

I wouldn't be shocked if 75 percent of Tebow's jersey sales are from Gators fans.
