Dana White and Oscar De La Hoya Create a Bromance On Twitter

King JOct 19, 2010

Sunday night I was driving back home from Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, well actually I was making this girl drive me and use her gas so I can safely hop on Twitter and see what my followers and people I follow are doing.

Oscar De La Hoya, hall of fame bound boxer/Golden Boy Promotions president was just tweeting about how he was giving away tickets to the Juan Manuel Marquez vs Michael Katsidis fight as well as a meet and greet with himself to the winner of the contest he was just about to ask the question for.

Then all of a sudden UFC president Dana White responded via Twitter back at Oscar saying this sounds awfully familiar.  Obviously implying that Oscar was taking the generous publicity stunt contest ideas that White is often known for when he gives away UFC tickets.

So hoping that Oscar would fire back and Dana and say something clever like, "I'm the Golden Boy b*tch!", I was anxiously waiting for Oscar's reply back to Dana. Unfortunately it was a complete 180 degrees from what I was hoping for. Oscar tweeted back that he was just learning from the master at Dana White. Which was a flattering way of saying I'm stealing your ideas.

I then tweeted to Dana White saying: KingJ323  @danawhite "someone biting ya style?"

Dana White then tweeted back to Oscar: @OscarDeLaHoya "you are the one that can fix boxing."

I then tweeted to Oscar: KingJ323 @OscarDeLaHoya @danawhite "well Arum and King are pushing like 90yrs old. Oscar will be the king of the world in matter of years"

Oscar tweeted back:  @danawhite "you have always done a great job, goldenboy has there hands tied up because of other promoters soon I will get same valuation."

Dana replied: @OscarDeLaHoya "I hear u. Everyone knows I am a boxing fan and will be watching. Good to see you on twitter! Welcome".

Oscar responded: @danawhite "let's talk I have some great ideas as I'm sure you do as well."

Dana then says: @OscarDeLaHoya "let's do it. Just got back from london and in vegas then to LA. Follow me and I will dm u and swap numbers."

Oscar tweets back:@danawhite "let's do it I'll call your office I just landed in Canada I'll be in la next week."

Dana then finally ends the very awkward yet public conversation with: @OscarDeLaHoya "perfect, see you soon."

For the record Oscar De La Hoya has 11,887 followers and just only 65 tweets as he just became active again on Twitter.

Dana White has 1,212,576 followers and has tweeted over 5,000 times.

White is definitely more active and interacts with his fans/followers as he often replies to many of his fans/followers and seems to keep it real as a down to earth guy making jokes, talking smack using profanity like a REAL person normally behaves.

Oscar on the other hand upholds his very clean cut politician like image with his tweets almost watching out what he says not to say anything a proper CEO should not say.

The next day several fight forums in both the boxing and UFC community were mocking the now infamous bromance birth of the two fight promotions presidents that took place on Twitter.

Many boxing fans questioned and insulted Oscar for suggesting that he would take advice from the UFC president and vice versa.

Say what you will about Dana White and the UFC, but the weekend of the Fourth of July UFC extravaganza: Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin pretty much had most of America buzzing about this UFC card. You could not even step into a sports bar, or chicken wing spot without everyone talking about this fight because there were posters plastered every where you looked and every tv screen was showing it.

Boxing on the other hand does not have this type of buzz unless the words: "Manny Pacquiao" or "Floyd Mayweather" are involved and better yet placed together in the same sentence with a: "VS" between them.

It is not even a question that Dana White is a beast when it comes to promoting his UFC fight cards the way boxing should be promoted and more so advertised and I think its because White gets it. He understands who is the UFC's key demographics and he knows how to appeal to them to the fullest and how to even get the casual fans hyped up as well.

White has always been verbal about just putting the best fights out there. Having the best fighters fight each other and not care about holding on to their undefeated records.

Most importantly White knows that you must stack a fight card up with several great fights. Not just a decent main event but several fights that will go head to head for fight of the night.

Should boxing finally seriously take these things into consideration then we will have a whole lot of new boxing fans fired up just as passionately as the UFC fans are for each UFC fight card.

Also just to make things clear as much as everyone hates on these two Presidents: White and De La Hoya, the most important thing is they are holding it down and they are both young, extremely wealthy, powerful and most importantly doing what they truly love. Every single one of us would trade places with either one of these guys in a heart beat.

Instead of hating on these two, learn from them and be inspired by them. I know I am.

Speaking of Twitter I am going to be at the Honda Center this Saturday for UFC 121: Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez. Follow me on my Twitter for a blow by blow live update and to see pics of all the stars in and out of the octagon.
