NFL Week 6 Report Cards: Breaking Down The Stars and Duds At QB
NFL Week 6 report cards are out. I reluctantly took my seat on the couch this morning. I say reluctantly because I remember all the pain I was caused last week at the hands of the Detroit Lions. Incidentally, people pained by the Lions usually are relegated to actual Detroit fans.
Well as you may know I was pleasantly surprised by Sam Bradford's performance. He was not the only surprise. Here we take a look at the ups and downs at QB in Week 6.
Matt Hasselbeck Seattle Seahawks
1 of 26
I’m feeling a bit generous today. Matt Hasselbeck did his best to not ruin the game. He took care of the ball and found the end zone. It was by no means remarkable but then again he was playing against Jay Cutler which would make anyone shine by comparison.
Grade: B-
25-40 / 242 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT / 87.7 Rating
Jay Cutler Chicago Bears
2 of 26
I’m still waiting for Jay Cutler to throw the ball. At the very least he could maybe elude the pass rush.
Cutler was back in action after taking a week off due to injury. He was right back to his old tricks as he failed to move the offense smoothly and was sacked six times just holding onto the rock. One of which was in his own endzone. You know...the area you may want to release the ball with haste.
Grade: C-
17-39 / 290 yards / 0 TD / 0 INT / 69.4 Rating
Chad Henne Miami Dolphins
3 of 26
While his defense was busy pestering Aaron Rodgers all day, Henne was taking it easy. He did enough to get his team within distance of a win. I don't mind passing his performance at all.
Grade: B
23-39 / 231 yards / 2 TD / 1 INT / 82.3 Rating
Aaron Rodgers Green Bay Packers
4 of 26
Rodgers belayed a stay on the injured reserve with the concussion he received last week. His offensive line rewarded him with five sacks allowed. He gets a passing grade for still passing for over 300 yards despite feeling woozy, I am sure.
Grade: C+
18-33 / 313 yards / 1 TD / 1 INT / 84.5 Rating
Phillip Rivers San Diego Chargers
5 of 26
The Chargers offensive line did little to help Rivers today. He was always on the move and sacked seven times. His lone interception was actually a good pass that was stolen by safety Oshimogho Atogwe. But alas, the faults of the line do not translate into extra credit. Rivers was ineffective all day. His line just exasperated the problem.
Grade: C-
22-37 / 249 yards / 1 TD / 1 INT / 77.4 Rating
Sam Bradford St. Louis Rams
6 of 26
I wish the Rams would tell me when they are going to play like this. Maybe then I will have people over to gloat at.
One thing that helped Bradford today against the Chargers was his poise under pressure. A rookie quarterback should not be that laid back upon being forced from the pocket. His only real ordeal came in a brief run that landed him a helmet to helmet tackle.
It would have the rest of Rams fans breathing easier if he would learn to slide.
Grade: B
18-31 / 198 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT / 87.8 Rating
Joe Flacco Baltimore Ravens
7 of 26
Joe Flacco did his job remarkably well today. He had a good completion rate and had the Ravens moving all day. Flacco made me one happy fantasy owner today. That will probably be no consolation to Ravens fans as the Ravens somehow found a way to lose the game.
Grade: A
27-35 / 285 yards / 2 TD / 0 INT / 119.3 Rating
Tom Brady New England Patriots
8 of 26
Something that is never said is particularly true today. The Patriots didn't need Tom Brady today. Until the end.
Brady was very ineffective early in the game. But being a great quarterback is knowing your time will come. His fourth quarter touchdown to Deion Branch started a comeback that kicker Stephen Gostkowski would finish.
Grade: D
27-44 / 292 yards / 1 TD / 2 INT / 69.5 Rating
Drew Brees New Orleans Saints
9 of 26
That's more like it. Coming of a lackluster performance against Arizona, Drew Brees showed the resilience Saints fans fawn over. He did so with style points to boot. He completed a 41-yard pass to Lance Moore in the first and followed with a 42-yarder to Robert Meachem. That is pretty much all the Saints would need for this one.
Grade: A
21-32 / 263 yards / 3 TD / 1 INT / 109.3 Rating
Josh Freeman Tampa Bay Buccaneers
10 of 26
Josh Freeman again put together a quiet, deceptively good game. For the second game in a row he threw for over 200 yards. He may be one of the better QBs you never heard of. Unfortunately for him, the Saints decided to play like Super Bowl champs this Sunday.
Grade: C+
25-43 / 219 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT / 79.5 Rating
Drew Stanton/Shaun Hill Detroit Lions
11 of 26
Shaun Hill
Shaun Hill looked like he was going to pick up right where left off last week when he torched the Rams for a blowout win. He would leave the game late in the first half with a broken arm and the game tied.
Grade: Incomplete
9-15 / 91 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT / 99.6 Rating
Drew Stanton
When Quarterbacks are dropping like flies on your team it only bodes well for one individual—the third string QB. Such is the luck of Dre Stanton who got to go out and throw the ball some today. He did just as well as you can expect.
Grade: C
19-34 / 222 yards / 1 TD / 1 INT / 73.4 Rating
Eli Manning New York Giants
12 of 26
Neither Eli Manning nor the New York Giants have been exactly lights out this season. So, when he throws a complete, Manningesque game it should be applauded.
Grade: A
20-30 / 177 yards / 2 TD / 0 INT / 104.4 Rating
Matt Ryan Atlanta Falcons
13 of 26
Matt Ryan played half a game. He didn't seem to find the momentum until after the half. By then his two touchdown tosses were insufficient to slow the Eagles onslaught.
Grade: C+
23-42 / 250 yards / 2 TD / 1 INT / 78.5 Rating
Kevin Kolb Philadelphia Eagles
14 of 26
For the second consecutive week, Kevin Kolb was on fire. He drove the Eagles with authority like any No. 1 QB would. Unfortunately, for Andy Reid this makes Vick's impending return even murkier. It seems like a good problem to have—but having two great quarterbacks could signal chemistry issues down the line.
Grade: A+
23-29 / 326 yards / 3 TD / 1 INT / 133.6 Rating
Colt McCoy Cleveland Browns
15 of 26
With injuries to Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, another third-string quarterback got his chance to toss the ball around the yard. It is no easy task to get your first assignment against a defense like the Steelers have. McCoy did just as well as a rookie can when he is being rushed out of the pocket all day.
Two picks is never good. But moving the offense 280 yards and throwing his first touchdown as a Brown gives a little hope to the Cleveland faithful.
Grade: C
23-33 / 281 yards / 1 TD / 2 INT / 80.5 Rating
Ben Roethlisberger Pittsburgh Steelers
16 of 26
The NFL may have missed their chance to serve the Steelers their fair share of losses this season. Ben Roethlisberger came back from suspension showing little to no rust. Now they tout a fierce offense to couple with their always formidable defense.
Grade: A-
16-27 / 257 yards / 3 TD / 1 INT / 112.7 Rating
Matt Cassel Kansas City Chiefs
17 of 26
I may have to starting eating crow and give the Chiefs and Matt Cassel the respect they deserve. But not quite yet. In what was supposed to be a hard game for the quarterback, he threw with ease and efficiency.
The Chiefs defense however was another story. They gave back the assured win with three Texans touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Grade: A+
20-29 / 201 yards / 3 TD / 0 INT / 122.9 Rating
Matt Schaub Houston Texans
18 of 26
Schaub completly tore up the Chiefs defense in the fourth quarter. He drove the Texans deep into Chiefs territory three times in the fourth securing a touchdown in each drive. He and the Texans offense put together the greatest quarter on the day and secured the come from behind win.
Grade: A+
25-33 / 305 yards / 2 TD / 0 INT / 123.9 Rating
Jason Campbell Oakland Raiders
19 of 26
I think I picked up more yards than Jason Campbell just by going from my couch to the fridge today. At one point I seriously considered that the Raiders would be better off putting an injured Bruce Gradkowski in the game. It may have at least been interesting.
Grade: Ew
8-21 / 83 yards / 0 TD / 2 INT / 10.7 Rating
Alex Smith San Francisco 49ers
20 of 26
The NFC West is soft. So much so that the 49ers are not exactly out of the hunt despite five losses. Today however, was a must win and Alex Smith did enough to get it. Amidst the pressure of a season looming in the balance, Smith tossed two touchdowns that would be more than enough for the win.
Grade: B
16/33 / 196 yards / 2 TD / 0 INT / 87.4 Rating
Mark Sanchez New York Jets
21 of 26
Today's victory can be chalked up to the emergence of LaDainian Tomlinson as well as a 56-yard field goal by Nick Folk. Mark Sanchez however looked confused for most of the game. It was his first game of the season with two interceptions. Jets fans are happy to get a win, especially with their quarterback's worst game of the season.
Grade: D
17-30 / 198 yards / 1 TD / 2 INT / 60.1 Rating
Kyle Orton Denver Broncos
22 of 26
Kyle Orton looked like he had the Broncos offense clicking when in the second quarter he orchestrated an 80-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. That would be it as far as consistent productivity as Broncos never regained momentum.
Grade: C
14-34 / 209 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT / 71.8 Rating
Brett Favre Minnesota Vikings
23 of 26
It is a godsend for a quarterback when he has a star running back. It frees up the offense to take chances down field. Brett Favre has one one of the best in Adrian Petersen. This also allowed Favre to survive a very clumsy first half.
Favre finally got it going. It may have helped having Percy Harvin and Randy Moss catching your passes.
Grade: B
14-19 / 118 yards / 1 TD / 0 INT / 106.9 Rating
Tony Romo Dallas Cowboys
24 of 26
Yet another game that Romo gives up costly turnovers. His numbers were fairly good except for the two interceptions he threw. But they led to 10 points for the Vikings...and essentially the game.
Grade: C-
24-32 / 220 yards / 3 TD / 2 INT / 98.4 Rating
Peyton Manning Indianapolis Colts
25 of 26
Whether you like the guy or not, you have to say that Peyton Manning is one of the few quarterbacks you can count on every weekend. In what amounted to a tough game late, Manning continued to affect the Colts offense with his calming presence.
Grade: A
25-38 / 307 yards / 2 TD / 0 INT / 108.1 Rating
Donovan McNabb Washington Redskins
26 of 26
McNabb has a bothersome hamstring so I will cut him a bit of slack. However, he rarely looked like the Donovan McNabb we have all grown to expect great things from.
Right when they needed it most, he was unable to put together late drives to seal any kind of comeback.
Grade: C
29/45 / 246 yards / 1 TD / 2 INT / 67.5 Rating
