The Heavyweight Contest: Premier League Vs La Liga

Chris OstlerOct 17, 2010

The spark which led to me writing this article came driving home and hearing a comment on British Radio broadcasters TalkSport. It was a discussion between the presenters over the excitement of the Premier League and one of the presenters made a casual passing comment: "The Premier League is the best league in the world".

My point is the English seem to easily dismiss any other league and immedietly claim the Premier League is better than Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga and Ligue 1, but is this the case?.

It is easy to say you think a product is better than another when you haven't tried the other product in the market, it's pretty much the same case with football. I am not against people voicing their opinions but they need to have the credibility of investing in equal viewing times of the leagues in question.

I believe as do others that it's fair to say that La Liga and The Premier League are the current two best leagues in Europe, my case for this rests on the amount of world class players in both leagues it would take me about a week to list every top class player in both these leagues so I will spare you.

La Liga

La Liga was very watchable last season with the Real Madrid Revolution, Real in fact signed two of the Premier Leagues' best players from season 08/09, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso. For the start of the 10/11 season the changes had been rung again at Los Blancos as Manuel Pellegrini was quickly ushered out of the back door and the charismatic Jose Mourinhio was brought in. It was not just the coaching staff that was changed over the summer as Mourinhio made some very good signings among those signings where reliable countryman Ricardo Carvalhio to shore up the back, Sami Khadira to boss the midfield and Mesut Ozil and Angel di Maria to add spice further up the pitch. add these to Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema, Xabi Alonso and Higuain, and Madrid have unlimited potential going forward.

Rivals and Current Champions made two high profile additions in the form of Javier Mascherano from Liverpool and David Villa from debt ridden Valencia. Barcelona did off-load Zlatan Ibrahimovic to AC Milan on loan.

La Liga has started with Madrid churning out some trademark Mourinhio 1-0 wins and just leading the title race ahead of Pep Guardiola's Barca, intruth tho La Liga never seems to set fire until after the first El Classico meeting which takes place on Barcelona territory on November 28th.

Premier League

There has not been much significant change in the Premier League over the summer, with the exception of Manchester City of course, it's fair to say Shiehk Mansour's checkbook is not sitting around gathering dust, City added James Milner, David Silva and Mario Ballotelli to their ranks among others.

The biggest story over the summer was in actual fact about a tug-of-war between the two leagues in question as La Liga Champions tried to wrestle World Cup winner and Catalonia's own Cesc Fabregas away from Arsenal. In the end France won, well when I say France I mean Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who told Barcelona that there is no way their prize asset would be sold despite reports Fabregas himself desired to move home.

The new season of the Premier League has started with a bang and some truely incredible games already and goals aplenty, is the quality of defending getting worse or are attackers getting better nobody seems to know.

The verdict

Well to be brutally honest I can't tell you which league is better I will however tell you that fortunatley Premier League and La Liga games never clash and it is possible to watch both leagues in full most weekends. The real verdict may come early next year with potential clashes in the later stages of the Uefa Champions League.
