Firing Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy Would Be Unjust and A Mistake

Cain MuellerOct 17, 2010

Ted Thompson:

The Green Bay Packers are the most home built team in the league.  Thompson is a drafting machine who rarely misses in the early rounds the exceptions are Justin Harrell and Brian Brohm.  Lets look at Thompson's first and second round draft picks since he was hired:

Only three of those picks are no longer with the team and those are the only three that don't see significant playing time.  For comparison since 2005 the New England Patriots have six of 10 first and second rounds picks still on the team and only four start.  Only two players are on the roster that were drafted by the Packers before the Thompson era (Nick Barnett and Scott Wells).

While Thompson isn't the most flashy free agent buyer in the NFL but he has picked up players like Charles Woodson, Atari Bigby, Donald Lee, and Brandon Chillar.  Thompson also makes those low key trades for players like Ryan Grant and the serviceable Samkon Gado.

Mike McCarthy

Thompson hired Mike McCarthy in 2006 giving McCarthy his first head coach position ever has a coach.  McCarthy was named as NFL Coach of the Year in his second year, and made the transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers as smooth as possible on the field at least.  McCarthy hired defensive coordinator Dom Capers who changed the defensive system and improved the defense from 20th in '08 to finishing 2nd last season.

The Packers haven't won a super bowl with Thompson and McCarthy but its only a matter of time.  The Packers are 3-3 but have an injured list a mile long, and most are starters.  In today's game the Packers were missing six starters, and got production from all the back ups.  Miami is a good team, a playoff team, who has all their star players healthy.  The Packers could easily get healthy go 10-5 win the north and make a playoff run.  No team is really running away with the NFC or the league.  Be patient.
