Brandon Dubinsky's Hot Start is a Plus for the New York Rangers' Hot Offense

Nick PerriOct 12, 2010

The New York Rangers have played two games so far in the 2010-11 NHL season. The Rangers won the first game 6-3 over the Buffalo Sabres, and lost the second game 6-4 to the New York Islanders.

The Rangers offense has come alive this season, and a big part of it has been Brandon Dubinsky. Dubinsky has scored in both games this season, with two goals in Buffalo and a goal and an assist in Long Island.

Dubinsky is tied for team lead in goals with Derek Stepan (who has three goals this season) and he is leading the team in points with four. Though the season is extremely young, only two games in, Dubinsky’s hot start is worth noting.

The often criticized Rangers winger (and center) had a similar start two seasons ago when he led the league, with Aaron Voros, in goals and points scored after the first month of the season. Dubinsky ended that season, the 2008-09 season, with a weak 13 goals, 28 assists, and 41 points. Will this be another disappointing season after a hot start?

I am not a big fan of Dubinsky, and never have anything good to say about him. But I do believe this season will be his season to shine and that he will be a very big part of this season’s team, especially on offense. It’s only a matter of time before super star wingers Marian Gaborik and Alexander Frolov begin their scoring, and the expectations are that both of them nail at least 30 goals each (40 for Gaborik).

Beside them no one else on the team is a superb goal scorer, and there is no other player on the team expected to reach the 30 goal mark this season. But, if Brandon Dubinsky can score on a consistent basis he will reach 30 goals for the first time this season.

He is playing on what has been the Rangers best forward line (the “Young-Star” line of Dubinsky-Anisimov-Callahan) and that will definitely play a role in him scoring 30 goals. That line has also been a major power play line. They did very well yesterday afternoon, and will likely continue their power play contributions.

That line has been hot to start the season, and it’s likely that all of them reach at least 20 goals. But if Dubinsky continues to play this way, and I believe he will, he may have a chance to reach 30 or more goals this season.
