NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Where Do The San Francisco 49ers Rank?

Mihir BhagatOct 12, 2010

Here are my NFL Power Rankings for Week 6.

After an intriguing set of games in Week 5, we've learned even more about key elements that can help us develop a better understanding of each team.

The San Francisco 49ers continue to disappoint, the Detroit Lions pummeled the St, Louis Rams and the Arizona Cardinals upset the defending champion New Orleans Saints.

So, let's find out how all that and more affect my weekly power rankings.

32. Carolina Panthers (0-5)

1 of 32

Week 5: Lost 23-6 to Chicago Bears

Last Week's Ranking: 31 (-1)

Surprisingly, a team that's won 20 games over the past two seasons remain winless this year and they're doing so due to a terribly executed offense.

So much for the most pro-ready quarterback of this year's draft class.

This Week: Bye

31. Buffalo Bills (0-5)

2 of 32

Week 5: Lost 36-26

Last Week's Ranking: 32 (+1)

The Bills demonstrated their inability to finish as they let an early 13-0 lead transform into a 36-26 loss.

Even though this is the worst team in the league, they have a strong pass defense and a pleasant surprise in quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick who has a passer rating of 99.9

Week 6: Bye

30. Cleveland Browns (1-4)

3 of 32

Week 5: Lost 20-10 to Atlanta Falcons

Last Week's Ranking: 26 (-4)

The Browns kept it close against the Atlanta Falcons, but they simply couldn't find a way to win.

Since the teams behind them won this week, they fall back in my rankings.

Much worse, though, is the fact that Seneca Wallace suffered an ankle injury during the game.

This Week: @ Pittsburgh Steelers

Week 5: Lost 27-24 to Philadelphia Eagles

Last Week's Ranking: 28 (-1)

Problems lie at all phases of the game, and they need to make some major changes if they want to turn this thing around.

At the same time, call me crazy but I still believe they have a decent chance at winning the division.

This Week: vs. Oakland Raiders

28. St. Louis Rams (2-3)

5 of 32

Week 5: Lost 44-6 to Detroit Lions

Last Week's Ranking: 23 (-5)

The St. Louis Rams appeared to be a team on the rise...and then they got destroyed by the Detroit Lions

We'll see how it affects their mentality moving forward.

This Week: vs. San Diego Chargers

27. Detroit Lions (1-4)

6 of 32

Week 5: Won 44-6 over St. Louis Rams

Last Week's Ranking: 30 (+3)

Believe it or not, the Detroit Lions are a team on the rise.

Their offense has a strong nucleus in place, and their defense will improve over time.

This Week: @ New York Giants

26. Seattle Seahawks (2-2)

Week 5: Bye

Last Week's Ranking: 25 (-1)

I'm struggling to figure out the Seattle Seahawks as they continue to be one of the most inconsistent teams in the league.

It'll be interesting to see how they respond after the bye.

This Week: @ Chicago Bears

25. Oakland Raiders (2-3)

8 of 32

Week 5: Won 35-27 over San Diego Chargers

Last Week's Ranking: 29 (+4)

Even though the Chargers nearly doubled them in terms of total offense, the Raiders used their strong special teams and opportunistic defense to win this game and end their 13-year losing streak.

This Week: @ San Francisco 49ers

24. Denver Broncos (2-3)

9 of 32

Week 5: Lost 31-17 to Baltimore Ravens

Last Week's Ranking: 24

Kyle Orton is one of the most underrated players in the league, but he needs more help if the team wants to get on the winning track.

This Week: vs. New York Jets

23. Cincinnati Bengals (2-3)

10 of 32
CANTON, OH - AUGUST 8: Terrell Owens #81 of the Cincinnati Bengals looks on before the game against the Dallas Cowboys during the 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Field at Fawcett Stadium on August 8, 2010 in Canton, Oh

Week 5: Lost 24-21 to Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Last Week's Ranking: 18 (-5)

Statistically, this team is relatively solid. However, Carson Palmer and his costly turnovers are killing this team right now.

Losses against teams like the Browns and Buccaneers are simply unacceptable.

This Week: Bye

22. Arizona Cardinals (3-2)

11 of 32
GLENDALE, AZ - OCTOBER 10: Wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald #11 of the Arizona Cardinals runs with the football after a reception against the New Orleans Saints during the NFL game at the University of Phoenix Stadium on October 10, 2010 in Glendale, Arizo

Week 5: Won 30-20 over New Orleans Saints

Last Week's Ranking: 27 (+5)

Despite losing several key players during the offseason and enduring a major quarterback reshuffle, the Arizona Cardinals have found themselves atop the NFC West.

Of course, that doesn't count for much nowadays.

What does, however, is beating the defending Super Bowl champions.

This Week: Bye

21. Dallas Cowboys (1-4)

12 of 32

Week 5: Lost 27-34 to Tennessee Titans

Last Week's Ranking: 17 (-4)

The Dallas Cowboys may just be the biggest disappointment of the season.

On paper, they're one of the most talented teams in the league. However, they've been unable to put it all together and their record is representative of that.

I thought they were going to turn things around after the Texans win, but they just can't get it done.

This Week: @ Minnesota Vikings

20. Minnesota Vikings (1-4)

13 of 32
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - OCTOBER 11: Brett Favre #4 of the Minnesota Vikings wipes his eyes as he walks off the field after the New York Jets won 29-20 at New Meadowlands Stadium on October 11, 2010 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Andrew Burton/G

Week 5: Lost 29-20 to New York Jets

Last Week's Ranking: 20

The Vikings may be a more talented team with the acquisition of Randy Moss, but they still have some major issues that they need to work out.

This Week: vs. Dallas Cowboys

19. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2)

14 of 32

Week 5: Won 36-26 over Buffalo Billls

Last Week's Ranking: 22 (+3)

The Jacksonville Jaguars have posted some impressive victories over the past couple weeks.

First, they kicked a 59-yard game winning field goal against the Colts and then followed it up with a comeback victory over the Bills.

Now, it'll be interesting to see how they perform on the national stage.

This Week: vs. Tennessee Titans

18. San Diego Chargers (2-3)

15 of 32
SAN DIEGO - OCTOBER 03: Quarterback Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers celebrates a Charger touchdown play against the Arizona Cardinals in the third quarter at Qualcomm Stadium on October 3, 2010 in San Diego, California. The Chargers won 41-10.

Week 5: Lost 35-27 to Oakland Raiders

Last Week's Ranking: 12 (-6)

Any time you lose to a team that's been an absolute joke (no offense), there's obviously something wrong.

Phillip Rivers may be throwing for a ton of yards, but that won't win a game.

Primarily, their special teams unit needs to get its act together.

This Week: @ St. Louis Rams

17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1)

16 of 32

Week 5: Won 24-21 over Cincinnati Bengals

Last Week's Ranking: 21 (+4)

For some strange reason, the Buccaneers are finding a way to win games and have already matched their total from last season.

Coming up, they'll have their first true test as to if whether or not they're a great team.

This Week: vs. New Orleans Saints

16. Philadelphia Eagles (3-2)

17 of 32
SAN FRANCISCO - OCTOBER 10: Kevin Kolb #4 of the Philadelphia Eagles passes against the San Francisco 49ers during an NFL game at Candlestick Park on October 10, 2010 in San Francisco, California.(Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)

Week 5: Won 27-24 over San Francisco 49ers

Last Week's Ranking: 16

Kevin Kolb played well as the starter in their win over the 49ers, as he properly utilized all the weapons in his arsenal.

Nonetheless, I'm sure the Eagles can't wait until Michael Vick returns to action.

This Week: vs. Atlanta Falcons

15. Miami Dolphins (2-2)

18 of 32
MIAMI - SEPTEMBER 26: Receiver Brandon Marshall #19 of the Miami Dolphins shouts during a game against the New York Jets at Sun Life Stadium on September 26, 2010 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images)

Week 5: Bye

Last Week's Ranking: 13 (-2)

The Miami Dolphins have slipped with two consecutive losses, both of which were critical divisional matchups.

However, fresh off their bye, let's see if they can turn things around.

This Week: @ Green bay Packers

14. Kansas City Chiefs (3-1)

19 of 32
ATLANTA - AUGUST 13: Jamaal Charles #25 of the Kansas City Chiefs against the Atlanta Falcons at Georgia Dome on August 13, 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

Week 5: Lost 19-9 to Indianapolis Colts

Last Week's Ranking: 9 (-5)

After multiple years of teams bidding for perfect seasons, and the '07 Patriots actually accomplishing the feat, the NFL no longer boasts an undefeated club.

The Kansas City Chiefs fought hard, but in the end fell to the Colts in a gritty battle.

This Week: @ Houston Texans

13. Tennessee Titans (3-2)

20 of 32

Week 5: Won 34-27 over Dallas Cowboys

Last Week's Ranking: 19 (+6)

The Titans are firing on all cylinders right now as they are relying on a cumulative team effort to win ball games.

This Week: @ Jacksonville Jaguars

12. Washington Redskins (3-2)

21 of 32
PHILADELPHIA - OCTOBER 03: Donovan McNabb #5 of the Washington Redskins celebrates after throwing a first quater touchdown pass against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 3, 2010 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jim Mc

Week 5: Won 16-13 over Green Bay Packers

Last Week's Ranking: 16 (+4)

The Donovan McNabb trade is appearing to be a wise one, as he's currently sixth in the NFL in terms of passing yards.

This Week: vs. Indianapolis Colts

11. Houston Texans (3-2)

22 of 32
HOUSTON - OCTOBER 10: Matt Schaub #8 of the Houston Texans throws the ball during the game against the New York Giants at Reliant Stadium on October 10, 2010 in Houston, Texas. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Week 5: Lost 34-10 to New York Giants

Last Week's Ranking: 7 (-4)

The Houston Texans got absolutely killed by the Giants last week, and aren't looking as strong as I thought they were.

Right now, their pass defense is starting to really hurt them.

This Week: vs. Kansas City Chiefs

10. Green Bay Packers (3-2)

23 of 32
GREEN BAY, WI - SEPTEMBER 19: Clay Matthews #52 of the Green Bay Packers encourages the crowd during a game against the Buffalo Bills at Lambeau Field on September 19, 2010 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers defeated the Bills 34-7. (Photo by Jonathan

Week 5: Lost 16-13 to Washington Redskins

Last Week's Ranking: 6 (-4)

The Packers definitely haven't played their best football this season. Yet, when they do, the rest of the league better watch out because they're lethal.

This Week: vs. Miami Dolphins

9. Chicago Bears (4-1)

24 of 32
CHICAGO - SEPTEMBER 27: Brian Urlacher #54 of the Chicago Bears gestures at the line of scrimmage against the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field on September 27, 2010 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

Week 5: Won 23-6 over Carolina Panthers

Last Week's Ranking: 11 (+2)

Maybe their 17-3 beating in Week 4 was a fluke, and this Chicago Bears team is for real.

This defense is strong, and Matt Forte showed glimpses of returning to his impressive rookie form.

We'll just have to see how long this surprise team can last.

This Week: vs. Seattle Seahawks

8. New York Giants (3-2)

25 of 32
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - OCTOBER 03: Justin Tuck #91 of the New York Giants celebrates after the tenth sack of the game against the Chicago Bear at New Meadowlands Stadium on October 3, 2010 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Ima

Week 5: Won 34-10 over Houston Texans

Last Week's Ranking 14 (+6)

The New York Giants are quickly looking much like the '07 version which won the Super Bowl.

If they can continue these type of performances, then they could find themselves amongst the league's elite.

This Week: vs. Detroit Lions

7. New Orleans Saints (3-2)

26 of 32
GLENDALE, AZ - OCTOBER 10: Quarterback Drew Brees #9 of the New Orleans Saints prepares to snap the ball during the NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals at the University of Phoenix Stadium on October 10, 2010 in Glendale, Arizona. The Cardinals defeat

Week 5: Lost 30-20 to Arizona Cardinals

Last Week's Ranking: 5 (-2)

The New Orleans Saints may be the defending Super Bowl champions, but they certainly aren't playing like it now.

They need to get back to running the football and making big plays on defense.

This Week: Bye

6. New England Patriots (3-1)

27 of 32
MIAMI - OCTOBER 04: Quarterback Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots warms up against the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium on October 4, 2010 in Miami, Florida. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images)

Week 5: Bye

Last Week's Ranking: 8 (+2)

I would have moved up the Patriots higher, but I seriously question the move they made to trade Randy Moss.

Of course, should I really be doubting the Patriots organization?

This Week: vs. Baltimore Ravens

5. Indianapolis Colts (3-2)

28 of 32

Week 5: Won 19-9 over Kansas City Chiefs

Last Week's Ranking: 10 (+5)

The Colts may have slipped in a few games, but they redeemed themselves by beating the league's only undefeated team.

This Week: @ Washington Redskins

4. Atlanta Falcons (4-1)

29 of 32

Week 5: Won 20-10 over Cleveland Browns

Last Week's Ranking: 3 (-1)

The Atlanta Falcons have surprisingly started 3-1, and are displaying all the qualities of a premier team.

This Week: @ Philadelphia Eagles

3. Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1)

30 of 32

Week 5: Bye

Last Week's Ranking: 2 (-1)

I don't think anyone would've imagined the Steelers to go 3-1, and the fact that Big Ben now returns is a scary thought.

This Week: vs. Cleveland Browns

2. New York Jets (4-1)

31 of 32

Week 5: Won 29-20 over Minnesota Vikings

Last Week's Ranking: 4 (+2)

All that hype is proving to be the real deal now as the New York Jets continue to demonstrate all the qualities of a true Super Bowl contender.

This Week: @ Denver Broncos

1. Baltimore Ravens (4-1)

32 of 32

Week 5: Won 31-17 over Denver Broncos

Last Week's Ranking: 1

Even though their pass defense was exposed against the underrated Kyle Orton, I've got to give the slight edge as the No. 1 team to the Ravens.

We'll see if they can maintain it as they face a tough opponent next.

This Week: @ New England Patriots
