Randy Moss and Santonio Holmes Both Return Tonight: Who Will Have the Better Game?

Adam SpencerOct 11, 2010

When the New York Jets play the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football tonight, both teams will have new weapons at the wide receiver position.

Santonio Holmes and Randy Moss will be suiting up for the first time this year in Jets and Vikings uniforms, respectively.

While Mark Sanchez and Brett Favre will try to utilize their new toys as much as possible, only one will be able to lay claim to the better game. So who will it be?

Quarterbacks

Randy Moss undoubtedly has the better quarterback throwing to him, but so far this season, Sanchez has better numbers than Favre.

Also, Favre has the added stress of the tabloid scandal swirling around him. Look for that to affect his game at least a little bit.

Edge: Holmes

Running Game

Everyone knows the passing game works better when the run game is effective. So who will have the better rushing attack tonight?

My money is on the Vikings, who feature Adrian Peterson in the backfield.

Although the Jets have one of the best run defenses in the league, the Vikings are no slouches in that department either. Therefore, it will come down to who has the better running back. Although LaDainian Tomlinson is having a monster year, Peterson is still undeniably better. Look for him to open up the passing lanes for Favre and Moss.

Edge: Moss

Targets

How many chances will Moss and Holmes get to make plays?

Moss is immediately the best receiver on the Vikings by a mile, while Holmes is a close second to Braylon Edwards on the Jets' depth chart.

Factor in Dustin Keller's emergence as one of the best tight ends in the game, and Holmes might not get many chances to catch the ball and make a play.

Edge: Moss

Knowledge of the Offense

Moss has had less than a week to learn the Vikings playbook.

Though Holmes has been suspended for the first four games, he at least got to work with the Jets during the preseason.

Edge: Holmes

Defensive Match Ups

Darrelle Revis will be across the line from Randy Moss for most of the night, and he'll be out for revenge after being embarrassed by Moss in Week 2.

Holmes will be working against Antoine Winfield and Asher Allen mostly. While Allen and Winfield are very good cornerbacks, they are not Darrelle Revis.

Edge: Holmes

Conclusion

While Holmes has the edge in the most categories (3-2), Moss has the advantage in the most important category: targets.

Brett Favre will be looking Moss' way more often than Sanchez will be looking for Holmes. Additionally, Revis is still nursing a hamstring injury and might not be at full speed.

I project Moss to finish with somewhere around 80 yards with a touchdown, and Holmes to have a couple catches, but nothing too spectacular.

Winner: Randy Moss
