College Football Rankings 2010: Ohio State and Oregon Control Own Destinies

Nicholas GossOct 10, 2010

After Alabama's loss to South Carolina this weekend, Ohio State and Oregon are the clear favorites to reach the BCS National title game in January.

Week 7's AP and Coaches Polls were released today, and Ohio State and Oregon are No. 1 and No. 2 respectively in each poll.

Even though the uncertainty of the college football season is its most exciting trait, this season could very well lack the drama we've seen in years past.

Ohio State and Oregon have their path to the BCS title game in Arizona mapped in front of them, and the only ones who will derail their journey are themselves.

Ohio State has one difficult game ahead, the November 27 showdown with arch rival Michigan. But who really expects them to lose with a place in the national title game on the line, at home in Columbus?

The Wolverines don't have a chance. Plus, the game will be Terrelle Pryor's last chance to impress Heisman voters.

In front of a nationally televised audience, Pryor can win the award like former Buckeyes quarterback Troy Smith, who won the 2006 Heisman Trophy after his excellent performance vs. Michigan on the regular season's final day.

The Oregon Ducks are very similar to another BCS hopeful, Boise State. Both score a lot of points, but the difference is Oregon plays a tough Pac-10 schedule, while Boise State breezes through a cupcake WAC schedule every year.

Oregon looked very impressive vs. Stanford, beating them 52-31 at home last week.

The Ducks still have to play USC and rival Oregon State, but these are games they shouldn't have any problem winning.

As college football fans, nothing is more important than upsets, but unfortunately, Oregon and Ohio State will walk closer to Glendale, Arizona with each passing week.

We can talk about Boise State, the SEC champion, or Nebraska and Oklahoma, but the reality is that the BCS doesn't care.

Two undefeated teams from the Pac-10 and Big Ten conferences will top the BCS rankings and play for the national championship for college football, deserving or not.

For the sake of college football, fans can only hope this season's finish brings everyone closer to creating a playoff system.

Without a playoff system, we'll never know if Boise State can beat these top BCS schools.

The Broncos cannot help that they play in the Western Athletic Conference. In fact, Boise State, despite their WAC schedule, plays a much tougher non-conference schedule than almost every major BCS team.

Boise State is one team no one wants to play in the BCS title game, because the effort Boise will give to be champions will be impossible to match.
