Minnesota Vikings at NY Jets: Brett Favre Will Take a Bite Out of the Big Apple

James BrownOct 10, 2010

On Monday Night Football, the new-look Minnesota Vikings travel to the Big Apple to take on the New York Jets. Online sportsbooks such as BetPhoenix have set the Jets as four-point favorites over the Vikings. That number has been steadily dropping since the Minnesota Vikings acquired wide receiver Randy Moss from the New England Patriots.

The Vikings bolstered their offense and added a deep threat to Brett Favre’s arsenal when they traded a third-round pick to get Moss from the Patriots. Moss was very happy to be reunited with his former team and get a chance to play with Favre. The two will form a deadly combination of future hall-of-famers and should immediately improve the offense.

Off the field, Brett Favre is facing some other problems. This week it was announced that the NFL will investigate an incident between Favre and a sideline reporter, Jenn Sterger, whom he met when playing with the Jets. If Favre is found in violation of the NFL personal conduct policy, he could be suspended, ending his consecutive game record streak. Only time will tell if this will affect Favre or the Vikings.

For the Jets, they got some good news as cornerback Darrelle Revis announced that he could suit up for this game. He wanted to see if he was 100 percent by game time, but look for Revis to play in Round 2 against Moss.

The Jets also had some wide receiver news of their own. After his four-game suspension, wide receiver Santonio Holmes will play his first game since Pittsburgh traded him. He looked great in training camp and will bring another threat through the air for the Jets.

This game will have plenty of subplots and story lines with Favre returning to face his old team, Moss coming to the Vikings, and Holmes back on the field with the Jets. This game has all the makings of one of the best in Week 5.

Brett Favre lives for this type of game. He seems to play his best when faced with adversity and on the national stage, as he will be for this game. Moss will stretch the field and give more effort than normal since it is his first game in purple. That will allow Adrian Peterson room underneath to get some big gains on the ground. The Vikings rise to the challenge as they are 4-1 against the spread (ATS) against a team with a winning record.

The Jets are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games as a home favorite, and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0. The Jets stumble under the lights, as they are 1-5 ATS in their last six Monday games. They will lose to the Vikings on Monday Night Football.

Vikings 23, Jets 17
