NFL/New York Jets Weekly: Why It's Time For Darrelle Revis to Shut Up

Michael PerchickOct 8, 2010

Darrelle Revis is a great corner back.  Any look at his stats against some of the game's top receivers will tell you that.  So would watching Rex Ryan basically beg for his return throughout "Hard Knocks."  But enough is enough: it's time for Revis to shut up.

Has a guy who's never wonor even BEEN to a Super Bowlever trashed so many players and teams?  Revis hasn't even won a defensive player of the year, but seemingly takes every chance he has to bash on Randy Moss (who did burn him for a one-handed touchdown grab in Week 2).  Reviswho has held out not once, but TWICE in his young careeris beginning to gain more attention for his mouth than his play.

How good is Revis?  As in is he the best corner back in the league?  What makes him better than Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha, Denver Broncos CB Champ Bailey, or Green Bay Packers CB Charles Woodson (who did win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year last season)?  And that's the point.  In reality, as great as Revis is, he may be more of a product of Rex Ryan's mastermind defense than the best corner in the league. I haven't heard any real arguments of why he's so much better than the three cornerbacks I listed above.

Two seasons ago, the rage was Nnamdi.  Before that it was Champ.  Every couple of years, it seems like a new cornerback comes up and is the new "shutdown" corner.  But Revis' hold-out seems to have left him ill-prepared for the physical rigors of this season, as he looked rusty against the Pats in Week 2the same game where he pulled his hamstring.  The injury likely came from a lack of physical training for over a month before being thrust into the starting line-up again.

Yeah, Randy Moss may be "lazy," but he's also one of the greatest wide receivers ever to play.  As good as Revis is, I don't consider him one of the greatest cornerbacks ever to play yet.  Throw in that Revis is now considering a foray into the small screen, Jets fans should be concerned about their cornerback's constantly shifting focus.

Revis is a hell of a talent.  He has the ability to shut out an opponent's best receiver.  But he should let his gamenot his mouthdo the talking.
