Fantasy Football Week 5: Austin Collie, Jay Cutler Headline Injury List

Ray TannockOct 8, 2010

Another week of fantasy football; another week of injuries has many managers asking a ton of questions.

This week alone, I’ve received more questions about fantasy players than the last three weeks combined regarding injuries.

whether it was from my Start Sit Central column or my WK 5 WR Start Sit column, managers are making mad dashes to get the questions answered, so let’s try and make things a little easier with this week’s roundup.

There is—once again—a heavy favor toward running backs this week, and a couple of players you may not have heard about yet, so come take a peek.

Knowshon Moreno, RB, Denver Broncos

DENVER - SEPTEMBER 19: Running back Knowshon Moreno #27 of the Denver Broncos is stopped by defensive tackle Brandon Mebane #92 of the Seattle Seahawks at INVESCO Field at Mile High on September 19, 2010 in Denver, Colorado. The Broncos defeated the Seah

Latest Injury News: Moreno was held out of practice again with that lingering hamstring injury, and his fantasy effectiveness is in serious question again this week.

Fantasy Impact: Coach McDaniels didn’t readily rule Moreno out this week, but did consider him “questionable”.  The Broncos face a tough Baltimore interior line, and Moreno isn’t likely to do anything this week.

Your Move Is… Sit Moreno and elevate one of your backups to a starting role. If you have none, Ryan Torain still seems to be available in most leagues.

Austin Collie, WR, Indianapolis Colts

2 of 10
HOUSTON - SEPTEMBER 12: Quarterback Peyton Manning #18 of the Indianapolis Colts gestures to wide receiver Austion Collie #17 after a change of possession against the Houston Texans during the NFL season opener at Reliant Stadium on September 12, 2010 in

Latest Injury News: The news out of Indianapolis is becoming more and more disparaging concerning Austin Collie’s status. That nagging foot injury has been a problem all week, and he was even seen wearing a boot on it earlier in the practice week.

Fantasy Impact: Even if Collie gets the nod—which is a long shot at this time—he may not be all that effective since a foot is pretty important to a WR.

Your Move Is… Sit Collie this week, and play Garcon if you have him handcuffed.

Donald Brown, RB, Indianapolis Colts

3 of 10

Latest Injury News: Brown was held out of practice yet again, and it is all due to that hamstring injury which is the same hammy that grounded him last week.

Fantasy Impact: The likelihood of Brown suiting up this week is pretty much zero, and anyone out of the backfield in Indy, may not hold a lot of fantasy value, as they are all pretty dinged up.

Your Move Is… It is safe to keep Brown on the bench.

Latest Injury News: Barnett is done for the year regardless of whether or not he decided to get surgery on his wrist.

Fantasy Impact: This is a blow for IDP leaguers, particularly myself as a Barnett owner. BUT if you listened to me last week you went ahead and picked up James Anderson and enjoyed his one man wrecking crew and 14 solo tackles against the Saints.

Your Move Is… If you didn’t listen to me last week, do so this week.

Jahvid Best, RB, Detroit Lions

Latest Injury News: Best was limited in practice but it is being reported that he will suit up and play at St. Louis this week.

Fantasy Impact: best is an intriguing play this week considering he average 7.74 YPC on turf (like St. Louis) versus 3.34 on natural grass.

Your Move Is… Start Best!

Jay Cutler, QB, Chicago Bears

Latest Injury News: Cutler has been shut down this week due to a concussion he sustained last week.

Fantasy Impact: Cutler’s backup is Todd Collins which makes any player in Chicago other than Matt Forte lose significant value this week.

Your Move Is… Time to break out your QB 2

Michael Vick, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

7 of 10
PHILADELPHIA - SEPTEMBER 12: Michael Vick #7 of the Philadelphia Eagles walks off the field after a loss in a game against the Green Bay Packers at Lincoln Financial Field on September 12, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Packers beat the Eagles

Latest Injury News: Vick is out this week, and possibly next week with those banged up ribs.

Fantasy Impact: Kevin Kolb is not much of an upgrade over Vick since the Eagles go super conservative when he is in the game.

Your Move Is… Sit both Kolb and Vick.

Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints

8 of 10
NEW ORLEANS - SEPTEMBER 26: Pierre Thomas #23 of the New Orleans Saints is tackled for a loss by Dunta Robinson #23 of the Atlanta Falcons at the Louisiana Superdome on September 26, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Latest Injury News: Thomas is looking like a game time decision with that ankle injury, and a final call probably won’t happen until game time Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: If he does go, he’ll basically be in there to help build up the play action, not to be a playmaker. The Saints are gonna pas all day on the Cardinals.

Your Move Is… Sit Thomas.

Justin Gage, WR, Tennessee Titans

9 of 10
NASHVILLE, TN - OCTOBER 03: Justin Gage #12 of the Tennessee Titans makes a catch under pressure from Perrish Cox #32 of the Denver Broncos during the first half at LP Field on October 3, 2010 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Ima

Latest Injury News: Another possible game time decision will be Justin Gage of the Titans, although it is looking more and more as if he will not play period.

Fantasy Impact: Gage has been the subject of bad hamstring that won’t let up, and the chances of him actually playing aren’t good.

Your Move Is… Sit gage, and start Britt and/or Washington if you own either of them.

Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders

10 of 10
GLENDALE, AZ - SEPTEMBER 26: Runningback Darren McFadden #20 of the Oakland Raiders walks off the field after being defeated by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL game at the University of Phoenix Stadium on September 26, 2010 in Glendale, Arizona. The Car
The Car

Latest Injury News: McFadden’s hamstring continues to be a problem for him and the Raiders, preventing McFadden from practicing once again.

Fantasy Impact: McFadden has been doing rather well thus far, but he isn’t going to play. And against the Chargers who can stop the run, perhaps that is a good thing.

Your Move Is… Sit McFadden this week.

I hope this helps guys, and don’t forget to check out my WK 5 WR Start Sit Column if you missed it earlier.
