SATIREโ€”A Language Prof Deciphers OU-Texas Rivalry

โ€œYou needed to be there. Orange shirts, red shirts, fans donโ€™t like each other,โ€ Davidoff Clarkinov tells me. โ€œMany had quite nasty things to say about the rival team.โ€

My Russian friend Clarkinov, fluent in four languages, a professor of linguistics, and someone who loves tennis, just came back from his first OU-Texas Red River Rivalry. I was pretty sure the signs, T-shirts, and the banter would catch his attention.ย ย

โ€œOh, yeah,โ€ I tell him. โ€œWhen Sooner fans and Longhorn fans meet, thereโ€™s no civility. But I donโ€™t think theyโ€™re particularly clever.โ€

โ€œBut they are! Many Oklahoma fans were wearing shirts with a longhorn steer turned upside-down. Clever, right? They took their mascotโ€”the steerโ€”and turned him on his back. And then, when a Texas fan walked by and held up his index and little finger, the OU fan took the same gesture and pointed it to the ground. It was amazing.โ€

โ€œNo, Davidoff,โ€ I say. โ€œNot exactly amazing, both fans have their gestures. Did you happen to see any OU fans holding up only one finger?โ€

โ€œYes, I did,โ€ says Clarkinov. โ€œThat gesture, my friend, is universal. Hereโ€™s one I donโ€™t understand: A lot of Texas fans wore shirts reading FIRE GREG DAVIS.ย  That didnโ€™t make sense. Another shirt I saw Texas fans wearing was 'Choklahoma.'ย  What does that mean? I understood OKLAHOMO, making a homosexual reference. But Choklahoma?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a play on the state name, emphasizing โ€˜chokeโ€™ as if they want to โ€˜chokeโ€™ the Sooners or maybe implying the OU team doesnโ€™t come through in the clutch, seizes up (I grasp my neck in a choking gesture).โ€

I ask โ€œDid you see any โ€˜Texas Sucksโ€™ or โ€˜OU Sucksโ€™ shirts?โ€

โ€œThousands of them. I understood that one. I saw a few reading โ€˜Tuck Fexasโ€™, and that one took me a while. That was not nice. I even saw a few Texas fans wearing a shirt reading โ€˜You Canโ€™t Spell DOUCHEBAG without OU.โ€™ย  That, I donโ€™t get. Certainly you need the letters โ€˜oโ€™ and โ€˜uโ€™ to spell words that have the 'oo' sound. You canโ€™t spell โ€˜soupโ€™ without โ€˜ouโ€™ either.ย  Soup is good.โ€

โ€œWhat else did you see?โ€

โ€œI saw a few saying โ€˜MAKE TEXAS TOASTโ€™ and then I saw more Sooner fans wearing Longhorn shirts except where the horns should be there were handcuffs with the words โ€˜BOOK โ€˜EM.โ€™ I didnโ€™t understand either of those shirts. I like Texas toast.โ€ย

โ€œDavidoff,โ€ I explain, โ€œthose are tough ones. I like Texas toast, too, but in this case theyโ€™re using toast to mean โ€˜doneโ€™. As in โ€˜heโ€™s finished, he is TOAST.โ€™ Clever, right? The โ€˜BOOK โ€˜EMโ€™ thing is a little harder to explain. Here it is: Texas fans love to say โ€˜Hook โ€˜emโ€™ as if Bevo, their mascot, has hooked his horns into somebody. Like if youโ€™re a bull and you gore somebody, youโ€™ve hooked โ€˜em. But at the same time, an unusual amount of Texas players get arrested.โ€

โ€œSo they were being BOOKED at the police station,โ€ Clarkinovโ€™s eyes light up. โ€œThe word BOOK is a play on HOOK and the handcuffs symbolize the booking. I get it. I still donโ€™t get 'FIRE GREG DAVIS'. So many shirts, whatโ€™s a Greg Davis?โ€

โ€œAre you kidding? You teach applied and historical linguistics? You speak Russian, English, French and Spanish, and youโ€™ve never heard of a โ€˜Greg Davisโ€™?โ€

Clarkinov looks puzzled and then says โ€œNo. No, I canโ€™t say I have.โ€

โ€œWell, during the game, did you ever hear a cannon being fired after a score?โ€

โ€œI did. I do remember a cannon going off.โ€

โ€œClarkinov,โ€ I say. โ€œAt football games, whenever someone scores, a cannon is fired. The cannon is a big gun and in Texas, itโ€™s named after a famous body builder with huge bicepsโ€”Greg Davis.โ€

โ€œIf it is so common at all games, why donโ€™t both teams wear 'FIRE GREG DAVIS' shirts?โ€

โ€œBecause, my friend, OU likes to run their wagon after scoring. Texas likes to sing โ€˜Yellow Roseโ€™, play their big drum and then fire off their Greg Davis. Itโ€™s their big guns, which in body-building lingo is the biceps. Just ask any Texas fan. They love firing Greg Davis.โ€
