Going to Boston College and Doing Just Fine...
December 13, 2007
Jux Berg's article on Boston College was ill-informed and smacks of jealousy.
If he wanted to write a piece about how he doesn't like BC, fine, there's potential there.
But to try to claim that BC is the 'most unimportant team in college football,' and then backtrack when getting called out on his criteria (because NFL linemen aren't 'sexy' enough)?
It just goes to show that he is a fraud.
His article ignores many fine alumni who happen to play on the line: Dan Koppen, Damien Woody, Mathias Kiwanuka, Mark Colombo, Jeremy Trueblood, Josh Beekman, Fred Smerlas...
The list goes on and on.
But yeah, they aren't quarterbacks or wide receivers, so they don't count, right?
Most unimportant team in college football?
How about Rutgers?
They've been to exactly one bowl during the timeframe he spoke of, and it wasn't even on TV in most of America. Yet they get a tonguebath from the media. Meanwhile, BC is a consistent Top 25 team that puts out a decent number of NFL players.
Not bad production from a school that doesn't sell its soul for athletic success.
But still, BC gets ripped by blowards like Jux.
As for the academic argument — yeah, there are lots of BC grads from the '60s and '70s who probably have unjustly large egos considering that BC was a pretty good, but not great school back then. (However I would like to point out that these people laid down the building blocks that made BC what it is today.)
But open your eyes — today, BC is one of the hottest and best schools in the country. It is one of the top 10 'dream schools' in America according to the Princeton Review — meaning 'the ONE school that you would want to go to if money and admission weren't issues.'
Not a school you would consider applying to — the one school you MOST want to go to.
BC is not on the 'next tier' level of Northwestern, Duke, etc., but it is in that subsequent tier of schools right behind them (and coming up fast).
That's a hell of a lot better than where most of you went to college, I promise.
The reason why we have such crappy fan support is because most of our alumni season ticket holders are rich and prefer sailing and chardonnay to standing up and getting loud at football games.
It bothers me, but it's a pretty good problem to have.
Jux is just another bitter UMASS guy. He went to a very, very good state school with a pretty good sports tradition, but his school's athletic program is totally overshadowed in his own state by a small, private, Catholic school with tough admissions standards.
That must really suck.
Being the 7th or 8th best school in Mass. is like being the 7th or 8th hottest girl at the Victoria's Secret fashion show, so that's not really much of an insult.
So yeah, I'm pretty content with BC: top 25 football and basketball, top 3 hockey, top 25 admissions standards, great faculty, beautiful campus, amazing city, a long tradition of community service and social consciousness, and a top-notch, formative undergraduate experience.
Yeah, it really sucks to be us.
