5-Star Football Recruit Travis Hughes Skips LSU: Is Virginia Tech in the Lead?

Michael PintoOct 4, 2010

5-star linebacker Travis Hughes, ranked as a top 10 middle linebacker by both Scout and Rivals, has drawn tremendous interest from all over the country, but he's narrowed his options down to a few selections.

After a trip to Virginia Tech in September, Hughes was scheduled to take a trip to LSU last weekend, but cancelled the trip without setting a new date.

Also on the schedule are Clemson, Maryland, North Carolina, and possibly Virginia.

The reasons for Hughes' cancellation on LSU are unknown, but it might have to do with his recent trip to Blacksburg and a rejuvenated interest in Virginia.

The Virginia Beach native had nothing but good things to say about the Hokies and appears confident in the coaching staff and direction of the program.

"Coach Beamer is a good guy, he's a great coach out there and just signed a six year contract extension with them, I know he's going to be there," he said. "They have a stable coaching staff and that's by far the most stable in the ACC. I'm real happy about that.

He has yet to name an official favorite, but Virginia is back in the mix and could potentially be a replacement for LSU on his visits tour.

"I do like Virginia and they have come back in the picture. I'm actually thinking about making a visit there an official," said Hughes. "I love the coaching staff over there and I have players and friends there."

Up next for the coveted linebacker is a trip to North Carolina, but like most prospects in his position, the recruitment grind is starting to take its toll on Hughes.

"In general, recruiting is getting harder too as I'm trying to narrow it down. I would still like to decide by the end of October, but that's getting hard."

Hughes insists that LSU, Clemson, and Maryland are all still in the mix as well, but it looks like he's leaning more and more toward staying in-state at Virginia Tech or possibly even Virginia.

His trip to North Carolina could change things though, so keep your eye on this one as we continue through the month.
