Diana Taurasi "Uncovered" on the Cover of ESPN The Magazine

ilee colemanOct 4, 2010

Somehow, some way, this just doesn't seem right.

As a huge basketball fanatic I would like to appreciate the skills and talents of professional players. Diana Taurasi is a WNBA player that has an abundance of both skill and talent.

She has carved out an image of a fierce competitor, a winner, and a champion, but these risqué photos of a naked MVP will ultimately "taint" the perception for some.

Maybe her advisers felt it was time to "soften" her image a bit. Maybe by doing so the WNBA could lure more fans to support women's basketball, and we all know that sex sells.

Or maybe Diana herself wanted to do it. Maybe she wanted to "uncover" things about herself that most people were questionable about. Diana's image is that of a rough tomboy who was allergic to lipstick and would rather wear flats and baggy jeans than heels and a skirt. I can understand why a move like this would adhere to her image.

I don't know if these photos will alter my view of Diana, but I'm certain it will do so for many others. She will always be a favorite WNBA player because of her skills and talent, not for what she looks like without her uniform. Endorsements can bring money and fame as well as added pressure and heartache. I hope Diana forfeits the latter.

These photos show an attempt to turn the corner for someone with a strong reputation and a preceding persona. Who knows, lipsticks and high heels could be looming on the horizon too, but then the question arises about her game: Will she continue to play like the Diana we always knew, or will she be too worried about portrayal of a new image that would have us referring to her as...Ms. Taurasi?

Either way, we wish her good luck!
