College Football Top 25 Rankings: Beginning of the End of Boise State?

James BrownOct 3, 2010

The new College Football Top 25 poll was announced this Sunday and teams changed positioning throughout the top 25.

Boise State is one of the best teams in college football and for most of the season they have been ranked No. 3 in the nation.

They are a threat to win the BCS Championship and sportsbooks like BetMania have them listed at 8 to 1 to win it all.

There is no doubt that Boise State can challenge any team for the championship, but the question remains, will they get a chance at the title? If this week’s rankings are any indication, it doesn’t look like it.

Boise State was leapfrogged in the rankings by Oregon. This is by no fault of Boise State. They played a team in New Mexico State that was winless on the year and the Broncos cruised to an easy win by the final score of 59-0.

They were sound on offense and defense and dominated every second of the ballgame. Yet because of the opponent, Boise St was punished in the standings.

Oregon defeated the No. 9-ranked Stanford Cardinal at home. They came back from a 21-3 deficit to win the game and are the elite team in the Pac-10.

At last check at BetMania, Oregon is listed at 6 to 1 to win the national championship. Oregon deserves a high ranking in the top 25 poll, but did they deserve to jump over Boise State?

Boise State and TCU now hold the fourth and fifth spots respectively in the poll with Oklahoma and Nebraska lurking right behind them. If both teams go undefeated, they should have a shot at playing for the title.

Yet the schedule keeps holding them back. They have tried to move conferences, schedule harder teams, and get good publicity, but nothing seems to work.

Inevitably, these teams are never going to get a shot at the national championship. It’s a shame considering that Boise State is about to have a turnover on one the best classes that they have ever had in school history.

It’s time for college football to make a change in the way they look at teams in the national rankings.

Boise State has proved they can play with any team in the country, but they are never considered one of the best and should get a shot at the big game.

That time should be now and by moving them down in the rankings after a win, proves that they will not get that chance this year.

Here are some other notable changes in the new rankings.

With the loss to Oklahoma, Texas dropped out of the top 25 for the first time in 10 years.

The Air Force Falcons were ranked No. 25 and entered the college football rankings for the first time since 2002.
