WWE Smackdown 10/1/10 Review: A Disappointing Debut

Graham GSM MatthewsOct 3, 2010

1. Dolph Ziggler vs. MVP for the Intercontinental Championship went to a no-contest due to Nexus interference

-A thought the title match was a great way to start off the show, but it only lasted a few minutes before it was interrupted. That's the second time Nexus interrupted an IC title match, and I can only hope we see a rematch at Hell in a Cell tonight.

The Nexus attack with Cena and Big Show was good, and established the matches for later in the night. I just don't understand why Barrett was given authority by Howe. Anyway, great way to fire up the crowd for the night.

2. Natayla, Kelly Kelly, and The Bella Twins def. Lay-Cool, Maryse, and Alicia Fox

-It was great, but it was decent. I'd rather see this than a crappy singles match. Why were the Bella Twins in there? They should of had Melina and Eve instead or Gail Kim. Mediocre match, finish, and way to promote the feud between Natayla and Michelle McCool this sunday, and to make Natayla looking stronger.

*Jack Swagger's Homecoming Interrupted by Edge

-Good promo for Swagger in the beginning, very funny with the mascot. I was hoping for Oklahoma's own Jim Ross to come out, but of course that didn't happen. But Edge did. Why Edge?!?

Two reasons why this didn't make sense to me: 1) They're both heel and 2) Edge is on RAW, at least I think he is if he's not moving. Don't get me wrong, these two would have an awesome feud, but I'm pretty sure Edge is staying on RAW to deal with the RAW GM.

They should of had Kofi Kingston come out since they have a feud going, and Kingston wasn't even on the show again! This was a very odd promo for one night, so I'm going to put this down under the "Random" column.

3. The Nexus def. The Big Show (5-on-1 Handicap)

-Finally Big Show's momentum comes to an end. I was getting sick of it, even though I like him. But why did Show only last a minute? Giving Nexus that kind of momentum I get, but it's most likely the last time we'll see them, so why not do something monumental? Unique finish at most though.

4. The Undertaker def. CM Punk

-These two USUALLY put on good matches, just look at three week ago when they put on a pretty good main event on Smackdown. This match, however, was useless. With Undertaker and this urn, is always going to be this dominant?

He better not be, he should only feel stronger just not invincible. He treated CM Punk like Jimmy Wang Yang for those three minutes. Terrible match, and the finish predictable. Hopefully we don't see anything like this on Sunday.

*Rey Mysterio Returns

-Alberto is great on the mic, and this promo was funny. The return was well done, and I'm glad they did this rather than a match. They should have promoted a match between the two for Sunday, but it's too late now. I'm hoping another awesome match between the two in the future.

5. WWE Champion Randy Orton def. WWE Tag Team Champion Cody Rhodes

-A complete waste of three minutes. You would think that since these two have history that they would make it a decent match, but sadly, Rhodes was only used to get him on TV. The Sheamus attack gave me all the assurance I need to think that Orton will win Sunday.

6. World Heavyweight Champion Kane vs. John Cena in a Lumberjack went to a No Contest

-With a disappointing show overall, I was expecting a good main event. I was wrong. The match itself before it went to a no contest was terrible. And I know I will piss people off when I say it was mostly Kane. These two I think would have a good feud, but not with this kind of in-ring work.

The Nexus did nothing basically, and did very little to hype the match at Hell in a Cell. Another no contest? Bad planning. We didn't need the after match assault, and I was hoping for Taker to attack Cena like last year to foreshadow a future feud. Total miss.

Final Review: The show itself did not live up to the expectations and did very very little to nothing to help hype Hell in a Cell. This show was better than some shows in the past, but not for this as a debut.

The matches on paper looked awesome, but everything was rushed. The entire show was rushed. I hope the RAW talent doesn't take all the spotlight on Smackdown otherwise all the midcarders and jobbers are gone. By the way, will they be going live EVERY week?
