WWE Smackdown on SyFy: Results, Questions and Comments
As of October 1, 2010, Smackdown has made the big move over to the SyFy network. It marks the first time the show has ever been on non-network television.
John Cena was announced as being in attendance at the debut, as were the five members of Nexus.
Who else was in attendance from RAW?
What other surprises did WWE have planned?
How did they set things up to move toward the "Hell In A Cell" pay-per-view?
Let's get down to it.
Nexus made their presence known, and while I understand why they attacked MVP, a perfect face target for the heel squad, their attack on Dolph Ziggler didn't make as much sense. The only thing I can think is that WWE is trying to get a head start on building up their next pay-per-view, "Bragging Rights," which is three weeks away. Wasn't there a better way to put Ziggler at odds with Nexus?
And, is there really a need to have him at odds with Nexus? Wouldn't it have been a better idea to build up some intrigue by making it seem like Nexus might recruit Ziggler leading up to "Bragging Rights?" The only way he could remain heel and break his allegiance with Vickie Guerrero would've been to have him join Nexus... and wouldn't it make you hate Nexus even more if Vickie Guerrero was there to introduce Nexus with an "Excuse Me!"?
Apparently Nexus is allowed to help book matches on Smackdown during their first appearance. That's a first, as far as I can remember.
Could Nexus have chosen a better one-on-one match for John Cena than against Kane? Probably not, as Kane is on a great roll as of late. Not that John Cena can't be pinned, but there's also plenty of opportunity for the Undertaker and Paul Bearer to get involved and end it in a no finish.
Did anyone really care about the outcome of the 8-Diva Tag Team Match? Probably not, but maybe this means they won't be booked on pay-per-view. At least we got to see Maryse and The Bella Twins, right?
So in the second poor decision of the night, one of the biggest heels on RAW, Edge, attacked one of the biggest rising heels on Smackdown. I guess this is more build up towards "Bragging Rights," but do we really need a reason to like either of those guys? Couldn't they have had a FACE from RAW attack Jack Swagger? Wouldn't that have been a better idea?
Is anyone else happy—and a little surprised—that Nexus beat Big Show in a 5-on-1 Handicap Match? I actually thought that Big Show might find a way to win it.
How does that look, given that Big Show has been dominating people in handicap matches the past month or two? Yet he lost this handicap match, which John Cena often does well with?
The decline of CM Punk continued, as he was destroyed by the rejuvenated Undertaker. Is he going to drop back down to the Intercontinental Title division? If he fights Kofi Kingston in the next three months, I guess we know how that one will turn out.
Did anyone else think it was great to mock people by bringing out a Chihuahua wearing a Rey Mysterio mask? Is anyone else surprised that Rey Mysterio is making his return so soon? It seems like the last time he got "injured" he made a quick return as well.
Perphaps Christian's injury caused Rey Mysterio's return sooner than he was supposed to.
So after building up Cody Rhodes since his move to Smackdown, WWE thinks the best use of him on the big Smackdown SyFy debut is to have him lose to Randy Orton? Would it have been the end of the world to choose someone else to lose to Randy Orton, instead of the former Legacy member? If they were going to have Cody Rhodes vs. Randy Orton, couldn't they have had Drew McIntyre get involved and end it by disqualification? Orton could've found a way to hit RKO's on everyone, and then Sheamus could have still shown up and dropped Orton. What would the harm have been in giving Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre—the Unified World Tag Team Champions—a little bit of credibility as a team?
