Red's Cristiano Ronaldo Rebellion

Daniel LelyveldAug 15, 2008

With his mother having pictures published of him sporting the Real Madrid strip, it looked as though Cristiano Ronaldo's mind was already made up for him. Stories began circulating in the media about a possible summer transfer to the Spanish Giants and things became a little uneasy in the United camp.

The skillful winger who was at the time competing for his home country Portugal in the European Championships, refused to comment on where he would be come the start of the new season.

Some football fans will remember when Thierry Henry didn't comment on whether he would leave Arsenal or not, then he told the media he was staying a Gunner. He then signed for Barcelona not long after that saying he left because of David Dein departing and he wasn't certain of the future of long-serving manager Arsene Wenger. This seemed all too familiar when the Ronaldo saga kicked off.

Every time Cristiano was stopped by the press he refused to comment on the situation saying that he didn't know whether he would be in Madrid or Manchester. This caused an uproar amongst some United fans, already beginning to label him a traitor.

Then came United's fightback, saying that Real were publicising the story too much and most of what was relayed to the public was nonsense.

When the Red Devils fought this, saying it was unprofessional the way Madrid had come about trying to pry Ronaldo away from Old Trafford, the president of FIFA Sepp Blatter stood in and was misunderstood in his comparison of highly-paid footballers becoming modern-day slaves.

Eventually, the Portuguese forward met up with Sir Alex Ferguson while this was ongoing in the news and they came to an agreement that Ronaldo would be staying at least another season. Now it's time to see who will be doing the booing this season, either it's going to be the opposition crowd in frustration at how he keeps the ball and scores goals or it's going to be some of the United fans who still can't believe he played to the press like that in the off-season.

Maybe all the success of last season had got to his head but we can only hope we're entertained like we have been in past seasons.
