Recap: Carolina Panthers @ Philadelphia Eagles (Week 2, Preseason)

Matthew GilmartinAug 15, 2008

The Carolina Panthers (1-1)ย lost 24-13 to the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1)ย on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly, PA.ย  And it was probably the weirdest game I have ever seen.ย

First of all, there was a storm delay.ย  A lightning stormย descendedย onย the stadium with about five minutes left in the first quarter and didn't let up forย about thirty minutes.ย  Half an hour after that, play continued.ย

Afterย the game resumed, late in the first quarterย the Eagles tried to fool the Panthers with a fake field goal attempt.ย  As the Eagles holder tried to make a shovel pass to the intended receiver, Panthers cornerback Richard Marshallย blazed through the middle of the play, intercepted the pass, andย returned it 78 yards for a touchdown.ย  It was absolutely hilarious, and the facial expression of Eagles coach Andy Reid wasย priceless.

Now let's getย back to business.ย

The Panthers offense didn't look nearly as prolific as it did against the Colts.

The offensive line didn't open up many holes, much less any big ones, and startingย running backย DeAngelo Williams only broke one big runโ€”a 23-yarder down to the Eagles' 22-yard line early in the second quarter.ย  Overall Williams ran for 32 yards on eight carries.

Starting quarterback Jake Delhomme did okay, going 9-of-14 for 54 yards and an interception.ย  However, the one pick he threw wasย the result of a wet football getting away from him.ย  The intended receiver had created excellent separation from his manโ€”Delhomme didn't make a bad decision.ย  The ballย simply slipped, and it landed in CB Lito Sheppard's hands.

The Panthers defensive startersย were decent at best.ย  They didn't play nearly as wellย last nightย as theyย performed against the Colts.ย

The defensive line, especially Julius Peppers, hardly got any pressure on Eagles field general Donovan McNabb.ย  McNabb, who went 11-of-24 with 98 yards,ย often got the ball out to his receivers quickly all night, though he wasn't exactly accurate the entire time.ย

The linebackers did play well, though, helping the defensive lineย limit Eagles starting running back Brian Westbrook to 14 yards on five carries.

The secondary was utterly torched.ย  Eagles receivers were open for much of the night, and McNabb hit themย easily for much of the first half.ย  The wet ball was the only thing that slowed him down.ย

Even Eagles backup QB Kevin Kolb threw for 155 yardsย and one touchdown.ย  He also threw a pass that was intercepted by Panthers cornerback Dante Wesley afterย being tipped byย at least one another defender.

Philadelphia backup RB Lorenzo Bookerย was better than Westbrook, and he looked great in generalโ€”he rushedย for 25 yards on sixย carries and put together some nice runs.

Panthers quarterback Matt Mooreย threw for 85 yards on 11-of-19 passing.ย  Heย alsoย tossed anย interception that was tippedย once by another Eagles defender before linebacker Justin Roland picked off the pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown.ย

Weird coincidence: Panthersย backup running back Nick Goingsย ran for 27 yards on seven carriesโ€”those are the same numbers he had last week against the Colts.ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย

Panthers first roundย draft pickย Jonathan Stewart made his NFL debut.ย  Playing behindย the second-team offensive line, Stewart picked up three yards on four carries.ย  While Stewart's debut wasn't successfulย by any means,ย he will probablyย be much betterย when he's running behind the first-team offensive line.ย  No backย could do anything behind a crappy offensive line.ย ย

Second-teamย defensive backs Ricardo Colcloughย and Nate Salley led the team in tackles, with six and five, respectively.

But otherwise, the reserveย defensive units were just as unimpressive asย they were againstย the Colts.

This game certainlyย dealt the Panthers a cold reality check after theย too-good-to-be-true Colts game,ย and itย tookย everyone down a peg.ย  By now we know thatย ourย reserve defensive units coin the term "reserves", and that we have to get our players ready for the regular season.ย

As bad asย our whole teamโ€”even the first-teamโ€”was last night,ย it was aย really bizarreย preseasonย game, andย multiple starters (as well as some top backups) didn'tย play.ย

I guess thisย game is a great example of why they call it the preseason.
