Dez Bryant: Why Ringing Up a $55K Dinner Check Is a Bad Sign for Dallas Cowboys

Daniel WolfSep 29, 2010

The Dallas Cowboys, coming off of their first win of the 2010 NFL season, decided to teach rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant a lesson in hazing.

Bryant, who came into the NFL with some drama surrounding him due to an NCAA suspension, has been through the ringer.

He fell in the 2010 NFL draft due to character concerns.

He was on the receiving end of inappropriate personal comments and both instances may have caused him to slip down in the first round.

Wasting no time to pick him the Cowboys selected Bryant.

The rookie receiver then denied to carry veteran receiver Roy Williams' pads in training camp causing more media attention and reasons to be alarmed about his so-called "Diva" personality.

At the annual rookie dinner, Bryant saw his own teammates turn up the media heat once again by reportedly taking bottles of wine home while ringing up a huge tab that totally just under $55,000.

It was also reported that initially Bryant was to treat the offense but then Williams intervened and invited the defense to dinner too.

Was this a retaliation by Williams to prove a point to the rook?

That's what it appears to be.

"This is disgusting," said SI.com's Peter King on Sirius NFL Radio this morning.

King has a point because he went on to say how that amount of money would have been best served helping feed the needy instead of supplying wealthy football players with a means to unnecessarily indulged.

What it really comes down to is selfishness and Bryant was on the receiving end of it.

The rookie, who has been highly questioned over the past year-plus, did not need more media attention since it really does appear that he has a chip on his shoulder to prove all his critics wrong by doing the right things both on and off of the football field.

"The Cowboys should be ashamed of themselves," added King.

Perhaps this instance is just another sign of how the Cowboys are not disciplined internally from within the franchise and that may be the root of the issues fans have seen on field in 2010 so far.

Williams needs to watch his actions on and off the football field because he is already on thin ice due to the team drafting the young receiver and he could be out the door after this season ends.

No matter what the real issue is here, Bryant was made to look like a fool by his own teammates and that is a quick way to isolate players from within the team.
