Carolina Panthers Release Defensive Tackle Louis Leonard

Paul MuellerSep 29, 2010

The Panthers released defensive tackle Louis Leonard Tuesday after just one year with the team.

Leonard’s brief stint with the Panthers was peppered with injuries, as he missed the Week 2 clash with the Buccaneers with an elbow injury and was hampered by a knee injury throughout training camp.

He was acquired from the Browns via trade for a sixth-round pick at the beginning of the 2009 season. He recorded six tackles and a sack in two games before a broken ankle landed him on injured reserve.

This offseason, he was the favorite to win the starting job as the Panthers looked to revamp their defensive line after losing Julius Peppers to free agency.

Leonard signed a one-year, $1.6 million tender in the offseason, and the Panthers have yet to fill his vacated spot on the 53-man roster.

In search of their first win of 2010, the Panthers travel to New Orleans to face the Saints Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT.
