How the Steelers, Chiefs, and Bears Are the Only 3 Undefeated Teams In The NFL

Patrick SkehillSep 28, 2010

After three weeks of this young NFL season, only three undefeated teams remain.

Surprisingly these three teams are the Steelers, Bears, and Chiefs, not preseason favorites such as the Saints, Colts, and Vikings.

All three have had interesting roads to being unbeaten. All have required great execution combined with a lot of luck.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Without their star (on the field, not off) quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh has still managed to start off 3-0.

They’ve used their stellar defense to shut down their opponents offensively.

Troy Polamalu and James Harrison have helped anchor the league’s No. 1 scoring defense and allowed the Steelers to win games with Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch at the helm.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have managed to string together three wins for a surprise undefeated start. They have taken advantage of two easier matchups after a victory over division rival San Diego in Week 1.

The Chiefs were an underrated team entering the season, but now they won’t be overlooked. They’re tied for the No. 2 scoring defense after shutting down a sluggish San Francisco offense this past weekend.

Now the Chiefs have two weeks to prepare for Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are playing with house money right now. They are far and away the luckiest NFL team after three weeks.

Let’s face it—they lost in Week 1. Calvin Johnson and the Lions were robbed of a game-winning touchdown at the end of the game based on a rule technicality.

Last night they were handed a victory by the Green Bay Packers. Committing 18 penalties for 152 yards, the Packers blew the game in the last seven minutes.

A helmet-to-helmet roughing the passer penalty took back an interception on the first play of an eventual game-tying drive. Two plays later an unnecessary roughness penalty provided the Bears with another 15 free yards.

After the game-tying field goal, Brian Urlacher forced a fumble on the ensuing Packers drive. On the game-winning scoring drive, another defensive pass interference penalty took back a Packer interception.

In all reality though, the Bears have won all three of their games, regardless of how, and that’s all that matters.

With a little bit of luck and a number of upsets so far this season, only three undefeated teams remain.

While many would not have expected it, the Steelers, Bears, and Chiefs are surprisingly these three unbeaten teams.

All three teams will look to turn their early season success into playoff berths this season.
