Champions League Matchday Two Preview, Group E: September 28, 2010
Basel vs Bayern Munchen
Basel look out of their depth and that’s about all there is too it, they’ve lost their last three home matches in the Champion’s League, and playing against Bayern seems more than likely to result in it being their last four.
Basel rely on a possession based game, and it doesn’t seem all too possible that this sort of football is going to fly against Bayern Munchen. Playing for a win isn’t really an option although if they could manage to scrape a draw it may help them keep their pride and could even be important enough to help them slip through the group stages.
Bayern Munchen’s matches have made for some good watching, at least when it comes to the European games, the last nine matches involving the German’s have resulted in an average of 4.2 goals per game.
Bayern should give Basel a thorough trashing and odds are that this match won’t be at all too difficult. Thomas Muller created more chances from open play than any other player in the opening match of the Champions League, surely, if he plays as well as he did then, he will have every opportunity to create even more against a side which doesn’t have the best track record in defence.
Roma vs CFR
Roma have had a slow start to their domestic campaign; however, they did pick up an impressive win against champions Inter Milan last weekend.
Their manager, Ranieri, believes that a Champions League match could jump-start their season. He has also said that even the most established sides need to start taking the games minnows ever more seriously, the problems being that these sides are constantly improving and narrowing the gap between themselves and the big boys.
Two years ago Cluj beat Roma in somewhat of a shock result and whilst Raneiri was not in charge at the time he certainly doesn’t want to see a repeat performance.
CFR Cluj may be quite excited by this fixture, they managed a win here two years ago as we said earlier and they will be anxious to repeat this performance. The Romanians are supposed to be looking forward to this match up and have high hopes for the game.
After beating Basel 2-1 in their first game, they have a good chance of progressing through the group stages if their can repeat the performance from 2008, and it’s not as if they are a side which is lacking in quality.
