Breaking News: Buffalo Bills Surprisingly Release Quarterback Trent Edwards

Dan Van WieSep 27, 2010

According to the Buffalo Bills website, www.buffalobills.com, the Buffalo Bills have just released quarterback Trent Edwards.

It was rumored during the telecast of the Bills vs New England Patriots game yesterday that Edwards was on the trading block.

The Bills must have determined that having Edwards on the team, and a part of team meetings while being bandied about in trade rumors or discussions, would prove to be too much of a distraction to the team, so he is now free to pursue other NFL teams looking for a veteran backup.

Edwards went from the span of starting off with a clean slate under new coach Chan Gailey, to being declared the winner of the starting quarterback competition. Recently Gailey commented that he thought that Edwards was still able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Now, three weeks in to the season, he finds himself out a job and shuffling out of Buffalo.

Strong performances in the preseason led to some optimism for the regular season.

But when in the regular season, Edwards went back to his deer in the headlights type of look when facing heavy blitzing, and was sacked seven times in two games. His record of 2-8 in his last 10 starts must have also weighed in the decision to release him.

This decision means that the Bills are fully behind Ryan Fitzpatrick, and it will be his team going forward. Fitzpatrick led the Bills on five different scoring drives Sunday, while Edwards managed only three scoring drives in his two starts this season.

The Bills will have Brian Brohm as a backup to Fitzpatrick. It is not yet known who the Bills will add for their third string QB. Seventh round draft pick Levi Brown is still looking for work, or the Bills could sign a QB off of the practice squad of other NFL teams to replace Edwards on the roster.
