Fantasy Football Rankings: Six Reasons Mark Sanchez Should Be Your Starting QB

Nicholas GossSep 27, 2010

Mark Sanchez has become a very good quarterback—one worthy of a starting spot on your fantasy football roster.

After a horrendous Week 1 performance against the Baltimore Ravens, Sanchez has rebounded well, with two wins over division rivals New England and Miami.

With his confidence growing each week, and the number of quality players around him, Sanchez is a great option to start in both one- or two-quarterback leagues.

Offensive Line

Even with the loss of pro bowl guard Alan Faneca, the Jets offensive line remains one of the best in football. Left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold anchor a solid group that has allowed just five sacks in three games.

Those three games were against three solid defenses, including Baltimore, New England, and Miami.

The Jets offensive line will improve as the newcomers get more familiar with the blocking schemes.

Growing Confidence

The Jets' Week 1 embarrassment at the hands of Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens was one of the worst games Mark Sanchez has ever played.

He threw for only 74 yards on 21 passes against the Ravens defense, looking quite tentative all night.

Facing an 0-2 start in Week 2 against the division rival Patriots, Sanchez was given full control of the offense and put in a great performance.

Trailing at halftime, Sanchez lead the Jets to victory, throwing for 220 yards and three touchdowns.

The most impressive stat was his 70 percent completion percentage, finishing 21-of-30 for the game.

LaDainian Tomlinson: The Dual-Threat Complement

Even past his prime, LaDainian Tomlinson is the Jets' best running back and a dual-threat with his running prowess and great catching ability.

Always a great receiver, Tomlinson is giving Mark Sanchez a great option out of the backfield on blitzes or on a check-down read.

Tomlinson still has quickness and speed, and without a Super Bowl ring, he will give everything he has left to this Jets team. That is a true Super Bowl contender.

Tomlinson's running game has been key to the Jets success, as he has made up for Shonn Greene's lack of play this year.

Sanchez will use LT as a receiver often, and with Tomlinson's speed, he can rack up plenty of yards after the catch.

Sanchez and Keller: The 2nd Best QB-TE Combo

A quarterback's best friend is his tight end. A sure handed, strong receiver, and almost always open in time of need, the tight end is the quarterback's safety blanket.

While Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark are the top QB/TE pairing, Mark Sanchez and Dustin Keller are quickly becoming the second-best duo in the NFL.

After catching seven passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in New York's critical win in Week 2 vs. New England, Keller had even better game last night against the Dolphins.

Almost every pass in the first half from Sanchez went Keller's way, as he racked up 91 yards and two touchdowns in the first half vs. Miami.

After last season's struggle to develop chemistry, Sanchez and Keller have found their groove, and are now playing on the same wavelength.

Sanchez's trust in Keller, and Keller's wide receiver like style, even for a tight end, have made this duo a valuable reason to start Sanchez. A great tight end makes every part of the offense better.

Three Solid Receivers Give Sanchez Plenty of Options

While the Jets do not have a true No. 1 wideout, they have a trio of superb receivers.

Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, and Santonio Holmes give the Jets three quality receivers in addition to tight end Dustin Keller for Sanchez to pass to.

While waiting for Holmes to return from his NFL suspension, Edwards and Cotchery have done an exceptional job.

Cotchery provides Sanchez with a reliable possession receiver, and Edwards is a big-play threat with great speed.

Ball Security: Sanchez Has Six Touchdowns and No Interceptions

Fantasy football is all about touchdowns, and you cannot score touchdowns if you give the ball away.

Last year Mark Sanchez threw 12 TD passes but threw 20 interceptions. Even as a rookie, these stats were awful, and they made many fans wonder if he was worth the fifth overall pick in the draft...and the huge salary that came with it.

After three games this season, Sanchez has six touchdown passes and zero interceptions. Sanchez is learning how to find the open guy but not force it to a receiver well covered.

Sanchez's ability to make good decisions will comfort fantasy owners, and the option of Ladainian Tomlinson coming out of the back field as a receiver, gives Mark a simple route to look for when his receivers are covered, or he is being pressured in the pocket.

Mark Sanchez's improvement through three weeks has been immense. His team is now 2-1, and his teammates are beginning to feel very confident when he has the ball in pressure situations.

His weapons on offense, and his excellent offensive line make Sanchez a very trustworthy option as your starting quarterback.

With a Week 4 match up vs. the Buffalo Bills, one of the league's worst teams, Sanchez will only get better.

Start Sanchez. You will not regret it.
