NFL Prime Picks: A Weekly Series Devoted to Beating the Point Spreads

Thomas MorelandSep 23, 2010

7-9 two weeks in a row was not expected as the underdogs still run the ship going into week three.

I have noticed point spreads dropping on average as Vegas tries to even out the disparity, and this could be a good week to be all over the chalk instead of the underdogs.

Let us see where the chips fall this week as I will improve on 14-18 against all the lines.

The San Francisco 49ers travel to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs. The line is 2.5 and I do expect the 49ers to win this game. That being said a win by three will work. Take the Niners.

Cleveland is at Baltimore and 10.5 seems like a lot for a division game, even though it is the Browns, I will take the 10.5 all the way to the bank on this one.

Dallas gets 2.5 points against Houston?  That seems weird, even with the teams at 0-2 vs 2-0. This is a home game for the Texans, so win by three and they cover. It does seem likely watching both teams, so I will gleefully select Dallas this week instead.

Some people like Detroit as an upset winner this week, although it's been an eternity since Minnesota lost at home to Detroit. The points are the key here. Detroit can keep this game close enough to lose by 10. You get 10.5. Take the Lions.

New England is my survivor/eliminator picks in 2 leagues against Buffalo straight up. I would also take New England giving 13.5 points this week. Next week New England has problems with uppity fish.

Atlanta is a hot pick right now at 4.5 points against the Saints. If it's a field goal game you cash in. I like Artlanta also.

The Giants have a home game against Vince Young and the Titans. The Giants are tough to beat at home, along with the rest of that division. you only give 3.5 taking the Giants at home which is a solid investment on your gambling bucks.

The Steelers and Charlie Batch should beat Tampa Bay no matter who plays quarterback for the Steelers. You give up a mere 2.5 points taking the Steelers' defense to win one. I like Pittsburgh.

The Bengals have more weapons than Carolina and should wear them down with about 30 points which will be enough. The Bengals win by 3.5 easy.

The Eagles have way more talent than Jacksonville and will also cover the spread of 2.5 points with no problem this weekend.

Donovan McNabb will also carry the offense of Washington into St. Louis and beat the Rams who are improving. Just not yet. Redskins win this game by six.

The Indianapolis Colts will continue their drive back to the Super Bowl by defeating Denver by the required touchdown.

San Diego looked good last week, while the Seahawks looked horrendous. This would fool you into thinking San Diego will cover here, but watch out for this one. 5.5 is too much. Seattle could win this game at home outright.

The Dolphins have the Jets in Miami and should win this game. The line is 1.5. New England will beat Buffalo to go to 2-1. If Miami loses they are 2-1. If the Jets win they are 2-1.  That's what happens. Take the Jets!

Green Bay will win a close one against Cutler and the Bears. You give 3.5 taking the Packers. A field goal win by either team wins if you take the Bears. I like that scenario as the Bears win or lose by a field goal at home.

That should be a much better week.
