Laycool: WWE Teasing Their Breakup To Keep Us Interested in Divas Division

Gina GeatchesSep 23, 2010

The women’s division has been fizzling down in talent for a while now, and with that the matches and storyline development has to as well.

Smackdown currently only has six divas, three of which are currently actively wrestling. This leaves little space for storyline and match stipulations.

Kelly Kelly isn’t the most talented wrestler out of the bunch, which then leaves Laycool.

Layla has worked her way through the ranking since she won the 2006 Diva search, and has become a good all-around performer with plenty of charisma.

Michelle McCool competed in the 2004 Diva search and finished in seventh place, but WWE decided to hire her after the contest was over. Michelle McCool had a rough start due to fans complaining about her lack of charisma, but she did show potential to be a good all-around performer in the ring.

After the supplement draft in 2009, Layla was moved to Smackdown and formed a team with Michelle McCool. They have been the core of Smackdown's Diva division ever since.

Laycool has mocked and teased the Smackdown women’s division since it has been formed, but with few women left on the roster, there seems to be nothing for them to do. So the obvious choice is to break them up as a team.

The breakup of Laycool has been teased for a while now, but every time they look like they are on the urge of breaking up they come back stronger.

Is this all a ploy to keep the fans buzzing and interested again in the women’s division? If the WWE plays this out right, the breakup of Laycool could be entertaining and give the women’s division a much-needed buzz.

But if WWE plays this out too long, the fans could become jaded and bored. The storyline could become tedious and stale unless done right. So how long should WWE tease the fans?

Given that Laycool has been the center of Smackdown's women division for the last year, their breakup should not be done within a matter of moments.

I think WWE should tease their breakup for more time to come and continue the friction and jealously to build between them both. When the time comes for their breakup, I hope the creative team does not rush the storyline and leave it down to one match, but continues it for a while.

But this is looking doubtful now that the women’s belts has been unified, coupled with the return of Beth Phoenix and Tiffany soon. On top of that, WWE has the all-female cast of women wrestlers on NXT.

So what can we expect of the breakup? I hope WWE will give the fans a well-deserved long breakup of Laycool, in which Layla will been given the chance to shine out of the two, but I worry the storyline will be cut short and leave us despondent at the women’s division again in WWE.
